Area

The holiday houses are situated in a slightly hilly dune area between the North Sea and the inlet Stadil Fjord. The lovely beach, the unique location between the sea and the inlet, the varying scenic landscapes and the many leisure activities make Houvig an attractive holiday destination. Here you can swim, drive on your bicycle, hike or just have a good time in peaceful surroundings. Søndervig, 3 km from Houvig, offers good shopping possibilities, more restaurants as well as a few bars and a discotheque.

Beach

Houvig has a sandy beach with dunes. However, areas with stones can occur. You are not allowed to bring your car to the beach. The lovely wide beach invites both swimming as well as sunbathing and walks.

Nature

Dune areas, moor, forest and plantations characterize the nature surrounding Houvig. The inlet Stadil Fjord lays inland behind Houvig. Here you can experience the quite unique and open nature of western Jutland. The level landscape is separated from the North Sea by dunes, from which you have an exceptional view of both the inlet and the sea. The northern part of the inlet has been drained and cultivated from the fifties and until the nineties. Now the original nature has been recreated. The area has open water surfaces, forest of reeds and meadows, and birds, animals and plants are slowly returning to the place.

Activities

In the area around Houvig you will find a number of leisure activities. You can go on a bike ride, surf on the inlet or on the sea, go on a fishing trip or visit a water world. The inlet Ringkøbing Fjord is one of the most famous surf areas in northern Europe as the conditions are ideal. The large shallow areas and the safe surroundings make it both easy and fun to learn to surf here. Around the inlet Stadil Fjord you can follow one of the paths on foot, on bicycle or on horseback.

Attractions

The fortress 'Houvig Fæstning' is a relic of World War 2 and many bunkers from the former military installations are now visible on the beach. In the summertime guided tours in the fortress installations are arranged. On the museum 'Strandgården', close to Houvig, you can be informed of life in the dunes in the earlier days. The town Hvide Sande, situated in the middle of the bar Holmsland Klit, is the 5th largest fishing harbour in Denmark. The town offers a mixture of vivid activity and quiet charm. 'Fiskernes Hus' in Hvide Sande is a contemporary museum that informs of the story of the fish - all the way from the North Sea to the consumer.

Excursion spots

The regional museum Abelines Gård is a 130 years old farm on the bar Holmsland Klit. Here you can learn about life along the west coast during the first half of the 20th. century. The pretty old market town Ringkøbing with its red tiled roofs and old cobbled streets lies about 11 km from Houvig and is definitely worth a visit. LEGOLAND, app. 90 km from Houvig, is build out of 50 million toy bricks. The park offers a number of opportunities for family activities. In Givskud you can visit a combined lion park and zoo. Meet with more than 1,000 animals from the whole world on the 60 hectares large area.
