Area

Kølkær lies in the middle of Jutland and is surrounded by lovely, fertile and quiet natural surroundings. Here you can enjoy the varying nature, explore the old brown coal pits, swim in the lake Søby Sø, fish in the streams of the area or make an excursion to one of the nearby sights. Kølkær offers both shopping possibilities and restaurants. The village is situated close to both Ikast (11 km) and Herning (14 km), and in both towns you will find interesting sights, activities and shopping possibilities.

Beach

No beach is located in the immediate vicinity of Kølkær, but it is possible to swim in the lake Søby Sø, which is very suitable for children and situated only a few km away from Kølkær. Søby Sø is famous for its clear and very tempting water. About an hours drive from Kølkær brings you to the North Sea. The beach of Søndervig, 68 km away, is a lovely, lone and wide beach with fine sand, dunes and Blue Flag. You will also find good bathing beaches by the inlet Ringkøbing Fjord, which is situated about 50 km from Kølkær. By the beach of Bork Havn you can learn how to windsurf.

Nature

Kølkær is a quite unique nature area with i.a. lakes, streams, forest, fields and old coal pits. From the viewpoint 'Udkigspunktet' you can see it all from up above. The lake Søby Sø has nice and clear bathing water. Because of its situation in the centre of Jutland, Kølkær has both the highest temperature of the country during the summer and the lowest during the winter. The stream Fjederholt Å flows close past Kølkær, and the scenic natural surroundings in the river valley 'Fjederholt Ådal' is definitely worth a visit. Close to Kølkær lies the plantation Birkebæk Plantage. With its many forest paths and good viewpoints, it is an obvious excursion point. By this forest area you can also see the three bronze age mounds 'Hjortsballehøje'. Right outside of Herning you will find a lovely area with a raised bog. The area is called 'Knudmosen' and has 6 km of walking paths, which invite an active day in fresh air.

Activities

The many streams and lakes of Central Jutland make the area a paradise for anglers. Nowhere else in the country is it possible to find as many undisturbed places, where you can throw in the line. F.x. the nearby stream Fjederholt Å offers good fishing possibilities. More fishponds are also available close to Kølkær, f.x. Højkilde Lystfiskersø and Silstrup Put & Take. The area offers many golf courses by i.a. Herning and Ikast. In both Herning and Ikast you can play tennis and squash, bowl, drive go-kart and climb. Herning also has a large indoor activity centre 'Hoppeloppe Land'. Here you will find fun and wild amusements for children of all ages. The interesting landscape around Kølkær invites walks or a swim in the lake Søby Sø.

Attractions

The museum 'Hedelandsmuseet' in Kølkær shows a small collection of old agricultural tools and domestic utensils. The brown coal pits of Søby, which provided most of Denmark with coal from the late forties until the seventies, today consist of a large area with unique nature, brown coal ditches and a museum, which is established in one of the original houses of the area (3 km). Visit 'the capital of the moor' - the cosy textile, fair and culture city Herning. Here you will find a number of galleries, the museum of the writer Steen Steensen Blicher, shopping possibilities and various restaurants (14 km). The church of Skarrild is one of Denmark's oldest churches, and on the cemetery British pilots from a shot down military plane are buried (17 km). By the scenic moor areas and the forest by the river Karstoft Å the former manor house Skarrildhus is situated. The manor house is beautifully restored and around the house you will find a rhododendron park and an idyllic old water mill.

Excursion spots

In the zoo Jyllands Park Zoo (Haunstrup Dyrepark) you can experience, cuddle and feed more than 700 animals from the whole world (23 km). The 147 metres high mountain 'Himmelbjerget' by Silkeborg is one of the areas most famous and scenic excursion points. From the top of the mountain, or the top of the tower on the mountain, you will have a magnificent view of the landscape (40 km). In Givskud you can visit a combined lion park and zoo. Meet with more than 1,000 animals from the whole world on the 60 hectares large area (41 km). LEGOLAND is build out of 44 million toy bricks. The park offers a number of opportunities for family activities (52 km).
