The small village Thorsted is surrounded by fields as well as moor and plantation areas, and is an ideal holiday destination for nature lovers. A 20 km drive from Thorsted will bring you to the inlet Ringkøbing Fjord or to the North Sea. The location of Thorsted enables you to live in scenic and tranquil surroundings, and still be close to sea, inlet, big towns and the sights of the area.
You can buy groceries in Thorsted. If you wish to shop in larger towns, you can drive to Ringkøbing (20 km), Holstebro (29 km) or Herning (48 km).
There is no beach available by Thorsted, but 20 from here you can choose between the roaring waves and long sandy beaches of the North Sea and the tranquil water of the inlet Ringkøbing Fjord. The nearest North Sea beaches are Vester Husby, Vedersø Klit and Søndervig, which all offer fine sand, high dunes and Blue Flag.
Thorsted is surrounded by fields as well as moor and plantation areas. Just south of Thorsted you can take a walk in the scenic Hoverdal Plantage. Towards north you will find Klovsig Plantage, Fejsø-Thorsted Plantage, Stråsø Plantage and Ulfborg-Stråsø Plantage. All of these beautiful nature areas contain many marked walking paths of different lengths.
Around the inlet Nissum Fjord, which is a very important breeding location for migrating birds, you will find more wildlife refuges and bird conservation areas. On the uninhabited island Fjandø in the bottom of the inlet Nissum Fjord, you can see the sheep graze.
A couple of km behind the North Sea coast you will find the lakes Husby Sø og Nørre Sø. These lakes are the only freshwater lakes in the area, and they both have a rich birdlife.
In the activity centre Spjald FritidsCenter you can swim in the indoor swimming pool (12 km), and in the swimming baths Ulfborg Svømmecenter you will find activities for the whole family, among other things a 40 metres long water slide, springboards, sauna and solarium (12 km).
The many moor and plantation areas around Thorsted are ideal for hikes, bicycle trips and horseback rides. It is possible to rent riding horses in the area.
Anglers have good conditions here, as it is possible to fish in the streams, the Put & Take fishponds, in the inlets and in the sea.
The area is rich in golf courses, and golfers can test the courses of Holstebro Golfklub near Vemb (21 km), Trehøje Golfklub in Vildbjerg (24 km) and Dejbjerg Golfklub near Skjern (34 km).
Strandgården in Ulfborg is an old preserved dune farm, and here you can see a collection of old agricultural tools and fishing tackle, which are more than 100 years old (12 km).
At the regional museum Vedersø Egnsmuseum you can see a room, which is dedicated to Danish pastor and author Kaj Munk (19 km).
20 km towards north you will find the areas only preserved manor house, Nørre Mosborg, which functions as a museum today. The manor house is more than 700 years old and surrounded by a moat. Both the manor house and the appurtenant park are worth a visit.
Visit the old charming market town Ringkøbing, which offers a cosy harbour, narrow cobbled streets, well-preserved houses and good shopping opportunities (22 km).
Jyllands Park Zoo near Videbæk is a cosy animal park with more than 700 animals and birds from the whole world, a small fair for children as well as a big playground with Denmark’s largest jumping pillow. You can also take a trip with the train and ride on ponies here. You can bring your own food or buy it on the spot (25 km).
The open-air museum Hjerl Hede Frilandsmuseum near Vinderup is a live museum for the whole family. Here you can see how life in the country went on around 150 years ago (48 km).
