The cosy village of Starup nestles in the heart of mid and western Jutland, surrounded by a lovely vigorous nature with river valleys, fields with crops and grazing animals, meadows, marshes, forests and plantations. The idyllic stream Holme Å flows right by Starup, and the scenic coast-to-coast-path between Vejle and Blåvand leads along the stream past Starup.
Starup is located close to towns like Grindsted (15 km), Varde (25 km), Billund (27 km) and Esbjerg (35 km), so the distances to shops, restaurants, sights, amusements and beaches are short from Starup. It is also possible to buy groceries in Starup.
You can go for a dip in the lake Kvie Sø, which offers clean water, a sandy bottom and a bathing jetty. The water is shallow and therefore very child-friendly (15 km).
The wide and white North Sea beaches with fine sand, dunes and Blue Flag are available by e.g. Henne Strand and Vejers Strand - both 50 km from Starup.
The beach of Henne is traffic-free, whereas motoring is allowed on the southern part of the beach of Vejers. The northern part is reserved for bicyclists and pedestrians. A salvage corps watches the beach during the high season.
One of Denmark’s purest streams, Holme Å, winds past Starup in an almost untouched nature landscape. Along the stream you will find a rich vegetation and animal life.
Furthermore, Starup is surrounded by meadows, marshes, forests and beautiful plantations - among others Skovsende, Haldbjerg, Vrenderup and Starup. All of the plantations contains a manifold animal life.
The recreational lake Kvie Sø is one of Denmark’s purest lakes, and here you can experience a unique nature. A lovely place for swimming and walking (15 km towards north).
The stream Holme Å offers excellent angling opportunities, but you can also rent a canoe and sail on the idyllic stream.
The stream Ansager Å between Varden and Grindsted is rich in river trout, and the stream Grindsted Å is suitable for fly-fishing.
You can follow a part of the 120 km long walking path, which begins in Vejle, leads past the stream Holme Å and ends in Blåvand by the North Sea. Along the path you will find tranquillity and untouched nature.
In the covered court Hellehallen you can swim and exercise (7 km).
By the beautiful lake Kvie Sø you can walk, swim, play on the playground or make a picnic (15 km).
Golfers can test the courses of Gyttegaard Golf Klub near Hegnsvig (24 km) and Breinholdtgård Golf Center near Esbjerg (35 km).
The greatest sight in Starup is the beautiful nature with river valleys, forest and meadows that surround the village.
S. Syllatzes Kilde is a holy spring from the Middle Ages, which is said to have a healing effect. You can reach the spring through a staircase behind the church of Starup, which is scenically situated on a little hill in the meadows, just south of the stream Holme Å.
In the garden Tambour Have by the lake Karlsgårde Sø you can enjoy the tranquillity and the sight of the many scenic garden subjects. By the lake you can also see a wooden copy of the Little Mermaid (15 km).
Janus Bygningen in Tirstrup is an art museum for modern pictorial art, sculptures and handicrafts. Here you can experience interesting and varying exhibitions (23 km).
LEGOLAND® is build out of 50 mio. bricks. Here you will find more than 50 amusing activities for the whole family. Experience the pirates of Piratland, a ride in Frog Hopper in Miniland as well as Bob the Builder and his friends (28 km).
Visit Esbjerg and experience the art museum, the sculpture by the sea ‘Mennesket ved Havet’, the galleries, the many interesting shops and good restaurants (35 km). At the fishing and shipping museum Fiskeri- og Søfartsmuseet you can see colourful fish and dangerous sharks in the great aquaria. From the harbour of Esbjerg you can go on a pleasant harbour sightseeing tour.
From Esbjerg you can sail to the island Fanø in 10 minutes. With its old idyllic town environments, houses with thatched roofs, scenic nature and magnificent bathing beaches it is definitely worth a visit.
Givskud Zoo is a combined lion park and zoo. Meet more than 1,000 animals from the whole world at the 60 hectares area (47 km).
