Ribe was founded in the year 710 and with that it is Denmark's oldest town. The idyllic stream Ribe Å flows through the charming, evocative and historic town, which has a mediaeval town centre with old houses, hollyhocks, paved streets and a beautiful old water mill. Ribe offers shops, restaurants and a number of sights, like for example the cathedral Ribe Domkirke, the art museum Ribe Kunstmuseum and the viking centre Ribe VikingeCenter. From Ribe the distance to the unique Jutland Wadden Sea is only 6 km. The Wadden Sea is one of Denmark's five national parks. Ribe is an ideal holiday area for nature lovers, anglers, golf players and cultural tourists.
If you wish to swim by the wide sandy beaches of the North Sea, you can visit Lakolk Strand on Rømø - one of Europe's widest and most beautiful beaches (38 km), or go to Fanø (30 km to the ferry in Esbjerg) or to Blåvand (66 km).
The scenic stream Ribe Å flows right through the town, and you can both sail on and fish in the stream. Ribe is surrounded by fields, green recreational areas, moor and marsh landscapes as well as the unique Nationalpark Vadehavet, which is located just 6 km from the town. The Jutland Wadden Sea is one of the world's most important wetlands. Here you can experience plenty of water birds and Denmark's largest population of common seals among others.
A hilly ground, forests, lakes, heather, gaps and streams, characterizes the beautiful course of Ribe Golfbane. Here you can play on a well-kept 18-hole course or a Pay & Play course with 6 holes (8 km).
Anglers can try their luck in the stream Ribe Å, by the shore, on the sea or in one of the Put & Take fishponds of the area - for example Storkesøen in the centre of Ribe or Ribehøj Familiepark near Føvling (18 km).
You can swim in the swimming baths Ribe Svømmebad year round. Horseback riding and canoeing are also popular activities in this area. By following some of South Jutland's many bicycle and walking paths you can experience the scenic landscape at close range.
The 800 years old cathedral Ribe Domkirke is beautifully ornamented and from the 50 metres high tower of the church ’Borgertårnet’ you can enjoy the view of the flat marshland that surrounds Ribe.
Visit the Watten Sea centre Vadehavscentret and join a guided tour to Denmark’s latest national park, Vadehavet, or to the island Mandø.
The museum Ribes Vikinger has the viking age and the Middle Ages as its theme. Here you will also find an experience hall, a multimedia room and a mediaeval playroom.
At Ribe Vikingecenter you can experience how Ribe of the viking age has been reconstructed and vitalized.
At the regional farm Hygum Hjemstavnsgård in Rødding you can experience the course of the year with agriculture, field work and handicraft (21 km).
Step into the world of the iron age in Hjemsted Oldtidspark near Skærbæk. The large experience and activity park contains a museum, an iron age farm, graves and underground passages among other things (22 km).
Visit the island Rømø with Europe’s widest sandy beach as well as the magnificent and peaceful nature (34 km)
