Right in the middle of the magnificent and varying nature, 15 km west of Silkeborg and close to the 'mountain' Himmelbjerget, the stream Gudenåen and some of the most scenic areas in Denmark, Pårup is situated. Near Pårup angers will find extremely good fishing opportunities in the lakes of the area. It is possible to buy groceries in the area, which also offers a couple of restaurants, i.a. the inn 'Pårup Kro', which is one of Denmark's oldest inns from the year 1544. Pårup is a lovely holiday destination if you wish to be active in beautiful settings.
Pårup is not located near a sea, but you will find good bathing possibilities by the lake 'Almindsø', which is one of the purest islands in the country. Here you will find 2 sandy beaches; 'Østre Søbad' and 'Vestre Søbad', and a lifeguard watch the bathers during the summer months. If you wish to swim in the sea, you will find lovely bathing beaches on both sides of Denmark opposite Pårup. The North Sea beaches of Houvig and Søndervig are situated about 80 km from Pårup. Both beaches are lovely, sandy beaches with dunes and Blue Flag. The wide beaches invites swimming, sunbathing, walking and surfing. The beaches of the Kattegat by Skæring and Vrinners (north of Århus) and the beaches in the bay 'Saksildbugten' (south of Århus) are all good bathing beaches with Blue Flag and situated about 70 km from Pårup.
The scenic and undulating landscape, surrounding Pårup/Silkeborg offers large, green and recreational areas, a rich animal life, many viewpoints as well as pure and clear lakes. The water of the lake 'Almindsø' is so clean that you can drink it directly from the lake in the spring. Along the innumerable walking and bicycle paths of the area you are able to experience forests, heathery moor areas, meadows, lakes and streams. The 147 metres high 'mountain' Himmelbjerg is one of the most famous and scenic excursion spots of the area. From the top of the 'mountain' you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape.
Anglers will find very good opportunities in this area, which is abounding in water. Through out the line in the lakes, surrounding Pårup, in the lakes 'Silkeborg Søerne' or in the stream 'Gudenåen', and enjoy the scenic nature while you wait for a rise. By Grauballe and Kjellerup the two good Put & Take fishponds 'Skov's Put & Take' and 'Engholm Lystfiskersø' are available. The stream 'Gudenåen' lends itself pre-eminently to canoeing, and canoes can be rented all over the area. Go on a sail with 'Hjejlen', the world¿s oldest steamship, which sails daily on the lakes 'Silkeborgsøerne' from Silkeborg to Himmelbjerget. A number of golf courses are available in the area. Try out the recently established course by 'Himmelbjerg Golfklub' or the one of 'Silkeborg Golf Club'. Silkeborg offers bowling alleys, swimming baths and much more. The area also offers Scandinavia's only all-year, alpine ski slope.
Worth a visit
Don't miss an excursion to Himmelbjerget (147 m), which offers a great view of the lake 'Julsø', the stream 'Gudenåen' and scenic forest areas. Besides the third highest point in Denmark and the world's oldest steamship, Silkeborg offers a number of cultural sights, attractions, museums, galleries, shops, restaurants and amusements for the whole family. Silkeborg Museum is a culture-historical museum with an exhibition from the iron age, an antique glass collection and 'Tollundmanden', a bog corpse from the past. The art museum 'Silkeborg Kunstmuseum' is scenically situated, directly by the stream 'Gudenåen', and contains i.a. collections of the artist Asger Jorn as well as a pottery collection. The art centre 'Silkeborg Bad' is surrounded by forest and lake, and here nature, art, sculptures and beautiful buildings form a synthesis. 'AQUA Ferskvands Akvarium' is Denmark's only freshwater aquarium, and the largest of its kind in Northern Europe.
South of Silkeborg you will find a different kind of amusement park 'Labyrinthia'. The park offers challenges for the whole family; i.a. Europe's largest three-dimensional maze with a path system of 1 km (26 km). At 'Jysk Automobilmuseum' in Gjern you will find an impressive collection of more than 100 restored vintage vehicles (29 km). In Givskud you can visit a combined lion park and zoo. Meet with more than 1,000 animals from the whole world on the 60 hectares large area (41 km). LEGOLAND is build out of 50 million toy bricks. More than 50 activities provide you with speed, excitement and experiences! 'The funniest playground for the whole family' (52 km). Visit Århus, the 'capital' of Jutland, with the open-air museum 'Den Gamle By', the music house, the museums, the small and intimate alleys of the Latin Quarter and the lively atmosphere by the stream 'Vadestedet' (57 km).
