Aabenraa is located in scenic South Jutland and surrounded by water and beautiful beech forest. When you spend your holiday in the modern and charming shipping town you can experience the harbour, the cosy marina with a sandy beach, one of Denmark’s longest pedestrian streets with squares and shops, an old quarter with cobbled streets and well-preserved houses as well as the art museum Brundlund Slot. Aabenraa is an interesting holiday destination because of the many relics of antiquity and war monuments, the old military road Hærvejen, the scenic nature and the many cultural and amusing arrangements and sights.
By the marina of Aabenraa you can enjoy a lovely sandy and child-friendly beach with shallow water and a long bathing jetty. In general the area offers good bathing beaches with shallow and calm water. They vary between open sandy beaches and narrow stone beaches, where the trees grow all the way down to the water’s edge. The shore of the inlet Aabenraa Fjord offers idyllic bays and islands, where you can easily find a private and undisturbed place.
Aabenraa is surrounded by beautiful beach forests with forest lakes, inlets with cosy bays and hilly landscapes with hedges. Fertile moraine hills, undulating landscapes and lovely beaches characterize the peninsular Løjtland, just north of Aabenraa. By the point Varnæs Hoved - a natural amenity with al large clay cliff just south of Aabenraa Fjord, the landscape varies between fields, meadows, marshes, steep slopes, woods and a lake with forest-clad hillsides.
The many forests, surrounding Åbenrå, are ideal for hiking. Golfers can visit Aabenraa Golfklub and test the 18-hole course, which is situated in a softly hilled landscape with lake and hedges, surrounded by sea (10 km). You can angle along the shore or in one of the many Put & Take fishponds of the area. You can also go deep-sea fishing with a cutter from the harbour of Aabenraa. Take a ride with the historic railway (between Aabenraa and Rødekro) or how about a cruise with a paddle steamer from Aabenraa or Haderslev. Riding horses are available more places in the area. The swimming baths of Aabenraa are open all year round. During the summer you can experience town fairs, tilting at the ring, cattle shows and markets in Aabenraa.
Worth a visit
At the shipping museum Sønderjyllands Søfartsmuseum in Aabenraa you can see some of the objects, which were brought home from the world with ships from Aabenraa during the 18th and 19th century. The beautiful white castle Brundlund Slot in Aabenraa is surrounded by forest, water and gardens. Today, the castle functions as an art museum, which contains a large collection of C.W. Eckersberg among other things. Make an excursion to the peninsular Løjtland, which is characterized by hilly nature, idyllic sunken roads and beautiful old houses with thatched roofs (7 km). One of Denmark’s best-preserved grave mounds is Myrpold, which is scenically situated by the inlet near Avbæk. The burial chamber contained grave goods and 10 skeletons when it was discovered (8 km). A couple of kilometres east of here you will find the long barrow Tvekløft.
Visit the cosy and scenic island Barsø off Løjtland and enjoy the unspoiled atmosphere (11 km to the ferry). The castle Gråsten Slot and its gardens are surrounded by scenic nature with forests and a lake. The richly ornamented castle church and the castle garden are open to the public (20 km). The mill Dybbøl Mølle (originally from 1744) was formerly situated in a military area, and today, it contains photographs and mementos from the battle field (30 km). In Universe in Nordborg on Als both children and adults can gain knowledge about natural science through play (56 km). In LEGOLAND® you will find speed, excitement and experiences for the whole family. The park offers knights in armour, pirates, tough cowboys, wild Indians and much more (94 km).
