Area

The holiday house area is situated by the small village Saltbæk, only a few hundred metres from the water and very close to the bird sanctuary 'Saltbæk Vig'. Saltbæk belongs to the district Odsherred, which is a 'typically Danish' holiday area, as only a few of the houses here are rented out to tourists, but inhabited by the owners. Nature and bathing experiences as well as culture and sights await you here. It is possible to buy groceries in the area. The nearest larger town is Kalundborg (8 km), which offers an interesting harbour environment, a quite unique quarter from the Middle Ages, many exhibitions and a cosy town centre with restaurants and shops.

Beach

The beach of Saltbæk is one of the 3 beaches in the district of Kalundborg, which has been awarded with the Blue Flag. The beach is a mixture of sand and stones, and a bathing jetty is available here. The bottom is fine and sandy and the bathing water is clean. Take a walk along the paths - but remember to stay on the paths, as the bird sanctuary 'Saltbæk Vig' is preserved. You can find many different stones and fossils like i.a. fossilized sea urchin on the beach if you are in luck. The sandy beach of Havnsø (26 km), which belongs to the area 'Vesterlyng', is very suitable for children, has the Blue Flag and offers good conditions for windsurfers.

Nature

The bird sanctuary 'Saltbæk Vig' belongs among the largest lakes in western Sealand. It is a coastal lagoon, which is covered with reed in the wet dune hollow. The area 'Vesterlyngen' by Havnsø (26 km) is Sealand's largest moor landscape with meadows, small lakes, heather and rare vegetation. The area is a conservation area. Ordrup (44 km) is surrounded by forest, water and the tongue of land 'Ordrup Næs', which is a partly preserved nature area with hardwood trees and pines. From the tip of the isthmus you can observe both porpoises and common seals, if you are in luck.

Activities

Anglers will find good opportunities all along the shores of western Sealand, in the Put & Take lakes or on the sea onboard a fishing vessel, which sails out from Havnsø or Sjællands Odde. Furthermore, the cove 'Saltbæk Vig' is a good fishing spot. If you wish to play golf, the 18-hole course of 'Kalundborg Golf Klub' is recommendable, and if you wish to go riding, you are able to rent riding horses more places in the area (9 km). At the isthmus 'Ordrup Næs' you can follow a path all around the scenic area. Because of the good wind conditions of the headland, it is very popular to fly with kite here. The area is also of interest for divers, who can search for finds from an old stone age settlement about 50 metres offshore by 'Ordrup Næs'.

Worth a visit

Visit the mediaeval town Kalundborg (8 km). Experience the cobbled, narrow alleys and well-preserved half-timbered houses. Let yourselves be fascinated by the first-class architecture and visit the church 'Vor Frue Kirke' from the year 1170 with the five spires. The nature area 'Loch Ness' by Spangsbro (9 km) is a recreational area for the whole family. Havnsø (26 km) is situated in the bay 'Nekselø Bugt' and has always been an important ferry berth. Enjoy the atmosphere in the harbour of Havnsø, where you can buy fresh fish, or go with the ferry to the traffic-free island Nekselø, which offers a scenic and interesting landscape, a rich animal life and great views, or to the island Sejerø, which has Denmark's mildest climate, a hilly landscape, many small bathing beaches as well as more passage graves and a monolith.

Excursion spots

In the zoo 'Odsherreds Zoo Dyrepark' by Asnæs you can experience 600 animals, divided on 100 species (46 km). The castle 'Dragsholm Slot' is Denmark's oldest castle. The primeval fortress from the early mediaeval times has a dungeon and offers many ghost stories. A scenic palace garden belongs to the castle (47 km). The passage grave by Højby is one of the best preserved graves in the country. The passage grave has 2 chambers, is 4.5 metres high, has an external diameter of 26 metres and functioned as burial chamber for 98 people. The exhibition from the excavation can be seen on the nearby 'Stenstrup Museum' (59 km). The amusement park 'Sommerland Sjælland' offers more than 60 activities for the whole family, like a cosy canoe trip, a wild ride in the roller coaster or a visit to the largest water world in Sealand (63 km).
