The small and very scenic island Orø is located innermost in Denmark's second largest inlet 'Isefjord', only a few km from the mainland.

On the 14 square kilometres island Orø you will find peace, fresh air, a cosy island atmosphere, a lovely and distinguished nature, a rich animal life, good fishing opportunities, beach, an animal park, beautiful, old village environments, narrow alleys and well-preserved half-timbered houses. Bybjerg, the charming 'capital' of the island, offers a historic church, a regional museum, good shopping possibilities and an inn. More places along the roads of the island you can buy products from the farms. On Orø you can relax, walk in the nature, engage yourselves in water sport, fish, study birds or enjoy the quite unique atmosphere, which is inevitable on an island. Orø is connected with the mainland by 2 different ferry connections. The crossing between Orø and Hammerbakke on the mainland towards east lasts less than 10 minutes, and the ferry sails frequently (more times every hour). The crossing to Holbæk lasts about 30 minutes.



The only bathing beach on Orø is 'Orøstrand', which is situated by Nørrestænge on the north-western part of the island. The beach is a good, clean and sandy beach with a high water quality and the Blue Flag.


Orø is characterized by a lush nature with many marked walking paths, vast salt meadows, coastal slopes, small woods, plantations and fields. The island has a rich bird life, as the landscape offers plenty of food as well as resting and breeding places. Furthermore, you have the chance to meet roe eer, foxes, hares, pheasants, water rats, moles and the distinctive, green whistle toad, which whistles in the early summer. The highest places on the island are the hills ''Møllebjerg'' (29 m), ''Stensbjerg'' (28 m) and ''Elnebjerg'' (26 m).


The 14 km of walking paths lead you around the island and enable you to experience the nature at close range. As Orø is surrounded by water, is it only natural to go on a sail or sail out in a dinghy or a canoe on the inlet `Isefjord¿. The island also offers a 12-hole, indoor minigolf course. You can rent dinghies and bicycles as well as take part in riding trips on the island. Anglers will find good fishing opportunities all along the shores of the island.

Worth a visit

The church of Orø in Bybjerg was erected in the middle of the 12th. century and contains i.a. a beautiful, old baptismal font and a statue of the Virgin Mary. Behind the church you will find the small museum 'Ourø minder', which has been established in the former poorhouse of the island. Here a collection of local history with various folklore, old article for everyday use, pictures, a magnificent axe from the viking age as well as a copy of a large golden cross, found on Orø, are displayed. The nature school by Orøstrand has founded a large animal park/mini zoo with a savannah, and here you can experience interesting animals like f.x. llamas, ostriches, kangaroos, Scottish Highland cattle, coatis, raccoons, crocodiles and tropical birds in natural surroundings. The herb garden 'Orø Urtehave' is situated in a peaceful and rural area, and here you will find about 600 different healing plants, aromatic plant and schnapps herbs.

Excursion spots

From the small and idyllic fishing harbour 'Brønde' on Orø, you can sail to Holbæk, which is a modern commercial town with cosy alleys and old, restored houses. The crossing is very scenic and lasts about half an hour. In Holbæk you can shop, experience the atmosphere of the cosy marina and visit a museum, which consists of 13 historical buildings and offers music and theatre in the museum yard. Follow the idyllic path 'Strandmøllevej', which leads from the centre of town and along the inlet to the marina. At the museum 'Vikingeskibsmuseet' in Roskilde you can experience ships from the viking age among other things. The museum has its own island and harbour (32 km from Hammerbakke). Visit the capital Copenhagen with the vivid culture life, museums, music, theatres, galleries, the pedestrian street 'Strøget' and sights like Tivoli, Planetarium, Eksperimentarium, the art museum 'Carlsberg Glyptotek', the castle 'Rosenborg Slot', København Zoo etc. (66 km from Hammerbakke).
