The commercial culture town Hjørring is located in north-west Jutland, surrounded by hilly landscapes and sights, and just 12 km from the lovely bathing beaches of the North Sea. Hjørring offers a cosy and active town life with a long pedestrian street, good eateries, many shopping opportunities and a wide cultural selection. You can also visit the manor house Odden, museums, artisans, galleries and theatres. Furthermore, you can see around 250 outdoor sculptures and works of art around the town. Hjørring also contains more parks, among others Forstbotanisk Have with 160 species of Danish hardwood trees, as well as an old quarter with mediaeval churches, old buildings with shops and a restaurant, established in the old hospital of the town. When you spend your holiday in Hjørring, you live in a vibrant culture and commercial town, close to scenic nature areas, lovely North Sea beach and many sights.
Around 12 km from Hjørring you can enjoy the great wide and sandy beach with dunes, which stretches from Skallerup to Tornby. Here you can walk, swim and engage yourselves in beach activities. You can also try to paraglide from the 15 km long cliff Lønstrup Klint. From the North Sea beach you can also enjoy amazing sunsets. By Lønstrup the waves are brought under coltrol by breakwater, which creates quiet lagoons with shallow and child-friendly water. Behind the breakwater the sea offers good conditions for windsurfers. The beach is sheltered by the high Lønstrup Klint, which rises steep behind the beach. The beach Tornby Strand is a lovely and peaceful sandy beach with clear bathing water. This beach is sheltered by dunes with lyme grass, and you can always find a private and sheltered hollow in the dunes.
Hjørring is surrounded by different interesting nature areas. You can for example visit the forest Bøgsted Skov near Astrup, which contains the old manor house Bøgsted. By Rubjerg Knude you can experience the lighthouse, which is almost covered with sand, in the great desert-like sand dune. Hjørring Bjerge is a large hilly and varying nature area with a gazebo as well as a rich plant, bird and animal life. The streams Uggerby Å and Liver Å flow right around Hjørring. Here you can both fish and sail in canoe. Liver Å flows out into the preserved lake Vandplasken and creates an EU habitat area with plenty of birds.
The leisure activities are plentiful in Hjørring. You can bowl, drive in go-cart, play mini golf and visit the play land Hurlumhejhuset. I Hjørring Park Vendia you will find a great public swimming pool with water slide, a fun section with baby pool as well as a wellness section with hot-water pool, bio sauna and steam bath. Golfers can visit Hjørring Golf Klub, which offers 3 challenging 9-hole loops in a scenic and hilly terrain. Around Hjørring you will find many good walking, bicycle and riding paths. You can also sail in canoe or fish in the streams Uggerby Å and Liver Å. By the sea you can swim and surf in the waves. You can also try paragliding from the cliff Lønstrup Klint, which is one of Denmark's best paraglide spots.
Worth a visit
Vendsyssel Historiske Museum is housed in the old secondary school. Here you can follow the history of Hjørring all the way back from the Stone Age and see exhibitions about geology, antiquity, Middle Ages and church art among other things. The oldest treasure is a 28,000 years old mammoth tooth. At Vendsyssel Kunstmuseum you can see modern Danish art and varying exhibitions throughout the year. The museum also arranges tours and activities for children. In the active museum Håndværkernes Hus you can experience the atmosphere in the creative workshops. See when the woodturner, the blacksmith and the cabinet maker work or visit the telephone exchange, the weaving workshop or the spinning mill. Lønstrup is famous for its many artists, painters, sculptures, potteries and glassblowers. You can visit them in their active workshops and see when they create their handicraft products (13 km). Near Lønstrup you can visit a sand drift museum near Rubjerg Knude.
Visit Family Farm Fun Park near Løkken, where you can stroke the tame animals, sail on pedalos on a lake or play with the many activities (20 km). Behind Løkken you will find the beautiful monastery Børglum Kloster from 1180. The monastery offers historic atmosphere, exhibitions and a church (21 km). Nordsøen Oceanarium in Hirtshals contains Europe’s greatest salt water aquarium, which holds 4.5 million litres. Here you can see 60 different types of fish from the North Sea and even touch some of them (21 km). Visit Bunkermuseet Hirtshals 10. Batteri as well - a complete bunker facility with a museum from World War 2. Near Bindslev you can visit Ørnereservatet and experience the impressive birds of prey. Come close to sea eagle, giant Siberian eagle and Tibetan dragon her (21 km). In Fårup Sommerland you can try more than 50 rides for the whole family. Look forward to the giant waterworld and a rollercoaster, which rides both under above ground (33 km).
