The cosy Østerby is situated at the north coast of Læsø. Here you will find a charming atmosphere round the harbour of the town with pleasure boats and fishing boats. The shops and the restaurants of the town are centred around the harbour and right to the west of the harbour you find the bathing beach. There is also a very big playground in the harbour. You can also use a new area with patios and a big petanque field in the harbour.
Every day you can buy fresh fish from the local cutters at the local fishmongers.
The holiday homes in Østerby are close to the coast or a little secluded, hidden by the green surroundings.
Next to the marina you will find the wonderful bathing beach. The shoreline of the sandy beach is child-friendly, but the water gets deep quite suddenly and is therefore best for grown-ups and big children further out.
West of Østerby is the sandy beach Hvidebakker, one of the best bathing beaches on Læsø. The shoreline is child-friendly and the beach is screened by tall dunes.
To the east is Danzigmann with tall dunes and nice beaches. Danzigmann is the perfect place for experienced surfers.
The nature surrounding Østerby is characterized by woodland with a lot of paths and wide heathland to the east.
To the east of Østerby is the area Danzigmann, a big, open heathland with very tall dunes and a nice bathing beach. In spring as well as in autumn there are good chances here to find amber. The seal reef, where you can often see seals, is close to Danzigmann.
To the west you can visit the dune plantation Læsø Klitplantage. The plantation consists of wood and heathland with a lot of paths for walking, cycling and riding. The plantation has a wide animal life and in the autumn you can go looking for mushrooms such as chanterelles and penny buns.
If you don't bring your own bikes, you rent bikes in Østerby and go for a ride in the scenic area surrounding your holiday home. You could e.g. cycle to the seaweed house, Hedvigs Hus, to Danzigmann or to Læsø Seaside Golfklub, close to Østerby. Guests are welcome at Læsø Seaside Golfklub, where you can play golf on a beautiful seaside course that has obtained 16 out of 20 possible stars in the Peugeot Golf Guide. The course is beautifully framed by wood, heathland, dunes, lakes and creeks.
Anglers can fish from the pier in Østerby or go with the cutter Seadog out to the open sea to fish. Seadog arranges also other family sails such as e.g. seal safaris and sails to the northern Rønnerne.
Every year you can join various events in Østerby. The famous Norway lobster festival takes place in August, and the Day of Food, Madens Dag, takes place in September in the beautiful seaweed house Hedvigs Hus.
At the harbour in Østerby you can see the seiner N 162 Ellen, which is part of Læsø Museum. The cutter was built on Læsø in 1906 and still sails at regular intervals.
The 7000 m2 big rhododendron park on the outskirts of Østerby is a beautiful and well-groomed garden with not less than 2000 rhododendrons and a series of exciting, rare trees. Visit the garden early summer and enjoy the blooming in all the colours of the rainbow.
About 1 kilometre behind the town is the seaweed house Hedvigs Hus, which is a quite normal Læsø home from about 1850. The seaweed house has been gently restored by Læsø Museum and today it is intact with its seaweed splendour and timber-framing made of wreck timber.
One of the best preserved seaweed houses on Læsø is Museumsgården, På Lynget. The beautiful seaweed farm with seaweed roof of a thickness of more than a metre, is an intact Læsø home with the original interior dating back to the end of the 19th century. Museumsgaarden has a collection of paintings and Læsø costumes. See it by yourselves or join a guided tour. Outside, you can see an old, still functioning post mill.
You should also visit the Læsø salt works close to the protected natural resort Rønnerne. You can walk around between the seething huts and see how salt is seethed in open iron pans. Every hour in the peak season you can hear the seethers telling about the seething process and the history of the salt and the salt works.
From the tower of the salt works you can overlook the natural resort, Rønnerne, a place with various birds and wild flowes. You can also see the natural resort at close range from the Rønner bus or from a horse-drawn carriage.
