The holiday home area Nordmarken is close to Østerby at the north coast of Læsø. The area is quiet, cosy and very scenic with inland dunes, woodland, heathland and lovely bathing beaches. Close to Nordmarken is Læsø Golfklub and behind the golf course is Østerby, where you can go shopping, eat and enjoy the atmosphere at the marina. Nordmarken is a wonderful holiday resort for the active family that would like to bath, cycle and enjoy the peaceful surroundings; but the area is also perfect for anglers and golfers. Here you are staying in the middle of nature, but still close to shops, restaurants and all the attractions of Læsø.
At Nordmarken you find a lovely bathing beach with dunes. The beach, called Hvide Bakker, is one of the best beaches on Læsø and is framed by dune plantation and heathland. From the rather tall dunes by the beach you have a wonderful view of the area. You can even see the small cluster of islands, Nordre Rønner, 7 kilometres north of Læsø. At Hvide Bakker you can use the tables, benches and toilets on the spot.
You can also go for a swim on the nearby beach, Østerby Strand. Here the water is low and child-friendly at the shoreline, and just behind the beach you find a playground, an ice-cream stall and restaurants.
Nordmarken is surrounded by forest, inland dunes, heathland and bathing beaches. The nature is calm and unspoilt. Right to the west of Nordmarken is the beautiful dune plantation, Læsø Klitplantage - a wide and varying heath and woodland. Gateway Læsø is a part of the dune plantation and consists of a 10 ha big fenced-in dog park, a health area with training tools and a fire ring with tables, benches, grill, drinking water and toilets. You can cycle, walk and ride on the many paths in the dune plantation and if you like to go looking for mushrooms, you can find chanterelles and penny buns in the plantation in the autumn. From the highest points of Læsø dune plantation you may get a look at the seals romping on the stone reef Borfeld, north of Læsø.
Right next to Nordmarken golfers can look forward to playing on the beautiful seaside course at Læsø Seaside Golfklub. The 18 hole course is framed by varying woods, heathland, dunes, small lakes and creeks. The standard of the course is high and has obtained 16 out of 20 possible stars in the Peugeot Golf Guide. The course is open to guest players and in the peak season, you can also participate in golf matches.
The area around Nordmarken is also perfect for anglers. You can e.g. fish in the pond Læsø Fiskesø, just south of Nordmarken, a 10.000 m2 put & take fishing lake. Here you can catch trouts, eels and river crayfish. If you prefer to go fishing in the sea, you could try your luck from the coast or from the harbour of Østerby. Here you can catch sea trouts from March until November. If you want to fish in the sea, you can take the boat Seadog out on sea from Østerby. Seadog also offers other trips for the entire family, such as e.g. seal safari.
A few kilometres to the west, close to the lake Hornekssøen, you find two old lobster huts. The huts were used by the fishermen on Læsø at the beginning of 1900 and they lived here in the fishing season. In one of the huts, Læsø Museum has made a small exhibition of the former functions of the huts.
In Østerby, a few kilometres to the east, you can visit the beautiful rhododendron garden, a wealth of flowers and rare trees. You can see an abundance of colourful flowers in May and June, but the garden is beautiful all year round.
Right outside Østerby you can also see the renovated seaweed house Hedvigs Hus. Today the house looks like it did in 1850 with a beautiful seaweed roof and timber-framing of wreck timber. Hedvigs Hus is part of Læsø Museum. In summertime, the houseowners'' association holds an open house event a couple of times a week.
When you spend your holiday in a holiday home on Læsø, you should visit the most famous attraction of the island - Læsø salt works. The salt works are situated in the natural resort, Rønnerne, which also delivers salty water to the salt works. Here you can see salt being seethed in open iron pans in the seething huts. In the peak season the seethers tell about the history of salt and the seething process. In the shop you can buy freshly seethed Læsø salt.
From the tower of the Salt work you can overlook the Rønnerne. But you can also experience the natural resort at short distance from the Rønner bus or a horse-drawn carriage.
You should also visit the Museumsgården, På Lynget, when visiting Læsø. The beautiful, old seaweed farm with the thickest seaweed roof on Læsø is an intact Læsø home from the end of the 1900th century. See the original interior and an exhibition of paintings and Læsø costumes. Outside the museum you can see an old, but still functioning post mill.
