Nysted is Denmark''s oldest, smallest and most well-preserved market town with a charming harbour environment. From the harbour you can enjoy the view of the water, the forest ''Aalholm Skove'' and the castle ''Aalholm Slot''. Experience the old streets, the beautiful and well-preserved houses and the former water tower, which function as a gazebo today. The town has many green recreational areas down towards the water, and the beach of the town is situated in a parklike area. Nysted offers good shopping possibilities, more restaurants and various leisure activities. A lovely holiday destination for the whole family.

Nysted has a lovely beach called Skansen, as it is situated close to an old redoubt installation. The sandy beach is very suitable for children and situated in a park and forest area. The water is always a bit warmer here than anywhere else. The beach has the Blue Flag and offers furthermore good conditions for surfers.


Nysted is scenically surrounded by water, forests, fields and meadows. Opposite the western part of the town, the game preserve ''Nysted Nor Vildtreservat'' - a large area with forest, meadow areas and growths of marsh vegetation - is situated. The area is a part of a EU bird sanctuary. The forest ''Roden Skov'', just north-east of Nysted, contains more historic stone mountings and good walking routes. The northern part of Lolland is very wooded and has a rich animal life. In the nature park ''Maribosøerne'' you can walk in the scenic landscape or go sailing on one of the four lakes, where you can observe a rich bird life.


In the harbour of Nysted you can rent canoes or boats and go sailing on the cove ''Noret''. Or how about a walk or bicycle trip along ''Paradisruten'' - a scenic path, which leads past the harbour of Nysted, through beautiful landscapes, along the cove ''Nysted Nor'' and the forest ''Egholm Skov'', past small village environments and well-preserved half-timbered houses, and on the way you will experience more culture-historical relics. Angers will find good opportunities along the coasts of Lolland or onboard a fishing vessel, which sails out from Nysted. A couple of Put & Take fishponds are also available in the area.

Explore the old streets of Nysted with the beautiful houses and the gazebo, which has been established in the old water tower. Experience the atmosphere and enjoy the view in the charming harbour, where you can also have lunch or dinner and rent boats or canoes. Dip your own candles by the candle factory ''Svane Lys'' in Nysted - an experience for the whole family. Close to Nysted you will find the castle Aalholm Slot and the forest Aalholm Skov. The sight of the mediaeval castle ''Aalholm Slot'', which is scenically situated right by the water and surrounded by forest, can be enjoyed from the harbour or from the seaward side.

Excursion spots

''Middelaldercentret'' is an open-air museum by Sundby, where an authentic village from the 12th. century with houses, workshops, ships, vessels and a catapult has been created (18 km). In Nykøbing Falster Zoo (Folkeparken) you can experience no less than 500 animals, divided on 94 species (18 km). Visit the pretty old marked town Maribo. Here you can experience the cosy atmosphere, music, marked days, interesting shops, sights and restaurants (28 km). The open-air museum ''Frilandsmuseet'' in Maribo is situated right by the lake ''Maribo Sø'' and consists of a few houses, a farm, a post mill and a school. The museum gives you an impression of the peasant culture and the architectural style of the area around the year 1800. In ''Knuthenborg Safaripark'' by Maribo the wild animals move around in their natural surroundings - right around your car or bus. Observe giraffes, rhinos, ostriches, antelopes, zebras and Siberian tigers at close range (34 km).
