Hesnæs is an idyllic fishing hamlet with a number of quite unique houses, which, according to old tradition, are faced with rush and reed in order to shelter them from the easterly wind, which is often rough. In the cosy marina and fishing harbour you are able to buy fresh fish. Restaurants are available in the village, and in the market town Nykøbing, which is situated 12 km from Hesnæs, you will find good shopping opportunities and more restaurants. Hesnæs is very scenically situated by both forest and beach, and the distances to the many interesting sights on Falster and Langeland are short.
By Hesnæs you will find a lovely, wide and sandy bathing beach, which stretches from the harbour of Hesnæs, past a dam towards south, and all the way down to the outskirts of the forest 'Bønnet Skov'. The beach is sheltered by trees and hillsides, and is very suitable for small children, as the water is shallow at the edge. Here you can swim, sunbathe, walk, engage yourselves in beach activities and search for amber.
The nature, surrounding Hesnæs, is characterized by beautiful stretches of coast, forest and farmland. The lovely forest 'Bønnet Skov' is situated just south of Hesnæs and grows all the way down to the water's edge. Here you can experience the 30 m long and 12 m wide long barrow 'Ørnehøj', which contains an 8 m long passage grave. On a cliff in the forest you can visit the tea garden 'Pomlenakke'. The impressive forest 'Corselitze-skovene' covers an area of app. 6,000 hectares of land on the north-eastern part of Falster, only a few km north of Hesnæs. Besides a beautiful beech forest and other scenic landscapes, the forest offers more relics. The bird sanctuary 'Bøtø Nor' has 2 bird gazeboes, from which you can enjoy the view of the rich bird life, the large lake, the fields, the forest of reeds and the green meadows.
A very scenic path leads through 'Bønnet Skov' and can be used on food or bicycle. The beach of Hesnæs also invites walks. Anglers will find good fishing opportunities in the sea opposite Hesnæs, especially by the points 'Hestehoved' and 'Pomlenakke', which are both situated in the forest by Hesnæs. Furthermore anglers can make use of more Put & Take fishponds in the area of go deep sea fishing on their own. Lolland and Falster have no less than 6 golf courses, from which 4 have international standard. The 18-hole courses of 'Faster Golf Klub' and 'Golfklubben Storstrømmen' are the ones that lie closest to Hesnæs. Throughout the summer, trotting, dog and stock car races are being arranged on the trotting track in Nykøbing (26 km). Furthermore, you can ride on horseback, drive in go-carts, bowl, dive and visit an aquapark on Falster.
Worth a visit
Both forests 'Bønnet Skov' and the large 'Corselitze-skovene' contains more historic relics as for example grave mound, passage graves and cromlechs. At the motorcycle and radio museum 'Stubbekøbing Motorcykel- og Radiomuseum' you can experience a unique collection of old motorcycles as well as rare radios, loudspeakers, televisions and much more (12 km).
The 200,000 square metres amusement park 'Marielyst Familiepark & Aqualand' offers an aquapark and 50 leisure activities for the whole family (25 km). In Nykøbing Falster Zoo (Folkeparken) you can experience no less the 500 animals, divided into 94 species (26 km). 'Middelaldercentret' is an open-air museum by Sundby, where an authentic village from the 12th. century with houses, workshops, ships, vessels and a catapult has been created (26 km). 'Krokodille Zoo' in Eskilstrup has Europe's largest collection of different crocodile species. Furthermore, you can experience tortoises, monitors and an anaconda here (28 km). In 'Knuthenborg Safaripark' by Maribo the wild animals move around in their natural surroundings - right around your car or bus. Observe giraffes, rhinos, ostriches, antelopes, zebras and Siberian tigers at close range (59 km). Bonbonland offers more than 70 activities for the whole family - by land, by sea, and in the air (65 km).
