The small village Vårø is situated on the southern part of the island Tåsinge, which is characterized by narrow winding roads, small cosy villages with village ponds, beautiful coastal forest, orchards, fields, green spaces, salt meadows and sea. Vårø is an ideal holiday destination for nature lovers, bird enthusiasts and anglers.
About 2 km from Vårø you will find the 8 m high hill Vårø Knude directly by the South Funen archipelago and the large salt meadow Monnet with plenty of birds. Monnet is laid out as a conservation area.
It is possible to buy groceries in the area, and 14 km from Vårø you will find Svendborg, which offers mediaeval atmosphere, sights, good shopping opportunities and restaurants.
Bathing beaches are available near Skovballe (2 km) as well as on both sides of the peninsular Vemmenæs (8 km), and if you wish to swim by a child-friendly sandy beach with white sand, a sandy bottom and shallow water, you can visit the beach Slotshagen Strand near the castle Valdemars Slot (13 km) or the beach Smørmosen Strand on the island Thurø (24 km). It is also popular to surf by the beach Slotshagen Strand.
The conservation area Monnet is one of the largest salt meadows on Funen. The area is open to the public most of the year, but as the seaside birds breed here, the access is restricted during the early summer. At the end of Monnet’s level salt meadow you can see the 8 m high hill Vårø Knude, from which you can enjoy the view of the South Funen archipelago.
Tåsinge offers no less than 12 beautiful forests. In the forest Nøddeskoven by the castle Valdemars Slot and the forest Stenodde Skov on the peninsular Vemmenæs the beech trees grow all the way out to the steep slopes of the sea. South-west of Valdemars Slot you can see Denmark’s oldest and biggest oak - the Ambrosius oak, which measures about 7 m in circumference.
On the north-western part of Tåsinge the salt meadow Tåsinge Vejle is located. This place equally has a rich birdlife. From a gazebo in the area you can follow the activities of the water birds.
Tåsinge is also famous for it’s large population of roe deer.
Tåsinge is an ideal holiday destination for bird enthusiasts, who are able to follow the interesting bird life in the conservation area Monnet and on the ford Tåsinge Vejle.
Anglers will equally find good conditions here, as it is possible to fish in the inlet, the belt and in the sea. The north-eastern tip of the peninsular Vemmenæs offers the best fishing opportunities of the island (9 km).
It is possible to rent small boats on the island and sail around in the archipelago near Tåsinge. You can also visit some of the small, uninhabited islands and enjoy the unspoiled nature here.
The old forests of Tåsinge invite long walks or bicycle trips. The size of the island enables you to see it in one day on a bicycle.
Golfers can test an 18-hole, a 9-hole and a Par 3 course at Svendborg Golfklub (18 km).
Ingershøj in the northern part of Tåsinge is one of Denmark’s biggest grave mounds with a height of 7 m and a diameter of 41 m. From here you can enjoy one of the island’s best views of the archipelago (10 km).
Experience one of Denmark’s most beautiful castles, Valdemars Slot, near Troense (13 km). The castle was built in the 17th century and today it contains more museums. Near the castle you will find the old preserved watermill Ventepose Mølle, which also originates from the 17th century.
Visit the old skipper town Troense. Here you can enjoy the evocative streets and the half-timbered houses from the 18th century.
The shipping museum Troense Søfartssamlinger shows interesting exhibitions with ships and photos of former ships.
In the regional museum Tåsinge Skipperhjem og Folkemindesamling you can hear the story of the fabled love drama between Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre, who meet their death together in the forest Nørreskoven near Valdemars Slot.
Visit the mediaeval town Svendborg, which has preserved its old town centre with narrow and winding alleys, squares and yard environments (14 km).
In Naturama in Svendborg you can experience stuffed animals in all aspects. Among others you will see whale skeletons, bears, moose, wild boars, a gigantic polar bear as well as hundreds of birds. You can touch animal skins and bones and see the varying exhibition in Naturama.
The art museum SAK in Svendborg shows a permanent exhibition by the sculptor Kai Nielsen and furthermore, SAK arrange interesting varying exhibitions year round.
Visit some the other interesting islands in the South Funen archipelago. Svendborg has a ferry service to the islands Skarø, Drejø, Hjortø and Ærø among others.
