Tranekær is located in a large unspoiled forest and nature area, about 7 km north of Rudkøbing on Langeland. The town is characterized by its many old half-timbered houses and famous for its beautiful reed castle, the castle park and the castle mill. Furthermore, Tranekær offers shops, restaurants and more interesting museums. Because of the location of the town, the distances to beaches, both towards east and west, as well as to the other sights on this lovely island are short.

It is possible to swim on both sides of Langeland opposite Tranekær. About 7 km towards south, close to the harbour of Rudkøbing, you will find the sandy beach 'Bellevue Strand', which is very suitable for children. The beach by Helletofte is a lovely sandy beach with grass and a few stones. The water is shallow and calm, and therefore this beach is also very suitable for children (8 km towards north). Emmerbølle, a few km towards north, you will find another lovely bathing beach with a bathing jetty, which enables you to jump into the water (11 km). By the beach of Dageløkke, further north, windsurfers will find good conditions.


In the forest 'Stengade Skov', close to Tranekær, the beech grows all the way out to the shore. More paths lead from the parking ground to the water, where it is possible to both swim and fish. Along the paths in the forest 'Åsø Skoven' by Tranekær you can observe the incredibly rich bird life of the island. The forest 'Longelse Bondegårdsskov', a few km south of Tranekær, is a so-called 'untouched forest' where the trees are left to age. In the eastern part of the forest you can experience the 250 years old oaks with boles as wide as one metre. Hov is situated on the northern tip of Langeland and surrounded by an undulating landscape with forest. A marked route leads you through the forest and past historic places. By Hov you will also find the cliff 'Franke Klint' with the lighthouse and the plantation 'Hov Plantage' with the old black holiday cottages from before 1920 (25 km). In the undulation landscape of southern Langeland you will come across more fantastic viewpoints.


By Tranekær is would be obvious to look up cultural sights as well as swim, sunbathe, cycle and walk in the lovely nature of Langeland. Anglers have good opportunities in the area, as it is possible to fish directly from the coast or in one of the Put & Take fishponds on Langeland. Deep-sea fishing trips are arranged from the harbour of Rudkøbing. 'Langelands Golf Klub' has an 18-hold golf course by Tryggelev (22 km). From the course you can enjoy the view of the belt 'Langelandsbæltet', the nature area 'Hatbakkerne' and the marsh 'Fredmosen'. On Langeland you can sail, windsurf, dive, play golf, fish, walk or ride a bicycle. The island is an ideal place for nature lovers, who wish to experience the island on foot or on bicycle.

Worth a visit

The red castle 'Tranekær Slot' is the largest manor house on Langeland. The castle is highly situated on a hill, and from here you have a great view of the town and its old half-timbered houses. The castle park is one of Denmark's largest and contains many rare trees. An area of the park is called 'Ticon', and here artists exhibit their nature art. At the museum 'Souvenariet' by the castle you can experience new and old souvenirs from the whole world. The preserved mill 'Tranekær Slotsmølle' from the year 1846 is still running, and when the wind is favourable, ecological grain grinded. By the mill you can visit a museum for wind power. 'Tobaksladen' by Tranekær was used to dry tobacco leaves during World War 2. The barn has been restored in the original style and the entry is free.

Excursion spots

Visit the 700-years old marked town Rudkøbing with the original beautiful houses. Here you will also find an old part of town, small idyllic alleys with cobbled stones and the cosy marina (7 km). 'Langeland Museum' in Rudkøbing exhibits ancient collections with weapons, riding gear, silver coins, glass and silver. Rudkøbing also offers the museum 'Rudkøbing Byhistoriske Arkiv', 'Det Gamle Apotek' (the old pharmacy), the shipping museum 'Søfartsudstilling', the garden 'Den Gamle Have' and 'Skovsgård' (a museum for servant, carriages and forestry tools). 14 km north of Tranekær you can sense the cosy harbour environment in the picturesque harbour of Dageløkke. The former military installations 'Langelandsfortet' today function as a museum with canons, bunkers and an exhibition about the cold war (30 km).
