Area

In the south-eastern corner of Funen a small dam connects the mainland with the scenic island Thurø. The holiday houses on the quiet and cosy island are surrounded by lovely nature. Forests, good beaches, a reef and a natural cove characterize the island. Thurø also offers shops with groceries, restaurants and leisure activities for both adults and children.

Beach

On the east coast of Thurø, by the Great Belt, a beautiful recreational area 'Smørmosen' with a lovely sandy bathing beach, fresh and clean water, a 40 metres long bathing jetty with a water slide as well as a playground are at your disposal. The beach has the Blue Flag. Another good bathing beach is available by the reef 'Thurø Rev', in the south-east corner of the island.

Nature

South of 'Smørmosen' the forest 'Østerskoven', which grows all the way out to the water, is situated. Here you will find more marked walking paths. On the south-eastern tip of Thurø lies the reef 'Thurø Rev'. The reef is a piece of preserved and characteristic nature with meadow, small creeks and shallow lakes. During the summer you can observe a rich bird life here. The forest 'Fredsskoven' by Grasten is the most scenic forest on the island with both beech and pine forest. On the southern side of the forest, steep clay slopes lead down towards the water, and from the hillsides you can enjoy the view of Tåsinge and Langeland. The island is almost split into two by 'Thurø Bund', a natural harbour, where many sailors come to anchor at night.

Activities

The littoral regions of the island have a rare beauty and can/ought to be experienced on foot or perhaps from a horseback. In the area 'Smørmosen' you will also find ¿Thurø Minigolf¿, which consists of 20 hand made and artistically modelled concrete courses. The large recreational area, which is situated together with the minigolf course, offers free leisure activities for both adults and children. Anglers have good opportunities for a haul by the dam. On both sides of the dam, small platforms with room for 1 or 2 anglers are available. Golf players can test the course of 'Svendborg Golfklub', a scenic and varied park court in a slightly undulating terrain, surrounded by forest and fields and with a view of the south Funen archipelago. Furthermore, Svendborg offers a large bowling centre with go-cart track as well as a water world with facilities for the whole family (8 km).

Worth a visit

In Gambøt you will find the sailing club of Thurø `Thurø Sejlklub¿ with the many mooring bridges as well as a number of small fishing huts behind the drying ground. The church of Thurø was built in 1639 at the request of Ellen Marsvin - the mother-in-law of king Christian IV. The church contains more interesting works of art. It is situated on the highest and most beautiful point of the island, 25 metres above sea level, and from here you have a great view of both the island and the water.

Excursion spots

Visit Svendborg with the preserved old town centre, the narrow and winding roads, the squares and the backyard environments. The town is influenced by its history, which goes all the way back to the early Middle Ages (8 km). Don't miss one of the most beautiful castles in Denmark 'Valdemars Slot', which is situated by Troense on Tåsinge. The castle was built in the 15th. Century and contains more museums. Experience f.x. collections of art, furniture and trophy as well as an interesting toy museum (16 km). The church 'Ladet Kirke' is situated close to the castle, and here Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre are buried. During the summer months, the beautiful vintage ship 'Helge' from the year 1924 maintains a regular service between Svendborg, Vindebyøre, Christiansminde, Troense, Grasten and the castle 'Valdemars Slot' - an unforgettable experience. The beautiful castle 'Egeskov Slot' by Kværndrup is characterized as one of the best preserved Renaissance island forts in Europe (26 km).
