Rudkøbing - the 'capital' of Langeland and the hometown of the scientist H.C. Ørsted - is situated on the western shore of the island, and with the marina 'Rudkøbing Skudehavn' as well as the traffic harbour 'Rudkøbing Trafikhavn' it is also the harbour town of the island.
The 700 years old, very charming market town has preserved many of its original, beautiful houses and merchant's houses. In the old quarter you can experience squares and idyllic, small streets with uneven cobbled stones. Furthermore, the town contains an old town mill, a water tower, from which you can enjoy the view over the town, more interesting museums, galleries, potteries, restaurants and good shopping opportunities. Here you can make use of the towns cultural and active offers or merely just enjoy the cosy atmosphere in the large marina, where sailing boats, motorboats and fishing boats lie side by side.
Close to the harbour in Rudkøbing the child-friendly and sandy beach 'Bellevue Strand' is situated. Here you can swim, sun bathe and engage yourselves in various beach and water sport activities. The beach is sheltered by a small, covered hillside and high trees.
The beach 'Ristinge Strand' on southern Langeland is one of Denmark's best bathing beaches with dunes and pure water. The wide, nearly 10 km long bathing beach with white sand, facing south, is suitable for children as the water is calm and shallow (19 km towards south).
By the beach 'Dageløkke Strand', 21 km towards north, the conditions are good for windsurfers.
The area 'Rudkøbing Vejle' is a recreational meadow area with paths, enclosures with animals and a rich bird life. 'Vejlen' is situated up against the forest 'Rudkøbing Skov', which consists of both a new and an old part with i.a. beautiful beech trees.
The forest 'Longelse Bondegårdsskov' about 5 km east of Rudkøbing, is a so-called 'untouched forest', where the trees are allowed to age. In the eastern part of the forest you can experience the 250 years old oaks with stems of up to one meter in diameter.
On the southern part of Langeland the landscape is more undulating than on the rest of the island, and here you will find a couple of great viewpoints.
Rudkøbing invites walks throughout the town, along the sea or in the surrounding nature areas.
Anglers will find good opportunities in the area, as it is possible to fish directly from the shore, from a rented boat or in one of the Put & Take fishponds on Langeland. Furthermore, deep-sea fishing trips are arranged from the harbour of Rudkøbing.
Langelands Golf Klub by Tryggelev offers an 18-hole golf course (17 km). From the course you can enjoy the view of the water as well as the nature areas 'Hatbakkerne' and 'Fredmosen'.
On Langeland you can also sail, windsurf, dive, bowl, ride and go on discovery among the many grave mounds, visit artists in their studios etc.
The island is an ideal spot for nature lovers, who wish to experience the island and its animal life at close range on food or from a bicycle.
