Svaneke is a harmonious and beautiful harbour town with well-preserved half-timbered houses, old merchant's houses, stone fences, lush gardens, smokehouses, potteries, glass factories, galleries, sweet factories as well as many shops and cosy restaurants. It is possible to buy fresh fish on the harbour every day. An almost exotic atmosphere is prevalent in the town. Steep groups of rocks rise from the harbour, and high above Svaneke you can see two windmills. One of these is 'Stubmøllen' from the year 1634, which is the oldest in Denmark.
The 8 metres wide beach 'Hullehavn Strand' is situated by a rocky harbour on the southern coast of the island. The beach is very rocky, and therefore it is recommendable to use the available springboard when you are going for a swim.
10 km towards south you will find the beach of Balka, which is one of the most popular beaches on Bornholm. The kilometres long beach lies sheltered from the westerly wind and stretches all along the bay 'Balkabugten' and ends by Snogebæk. The wide and white sandy beach has shallow water and a sandy bottom. You have to walk far out before the water gets deep, which makes the beach very suitable for children. It is possible to rent water cycles, deck chairs and surf equipment here.
A slope leads from the ice-cream stall down to the waters edge, and makes it possible to bring a perambulator and a wheel chair to the beach.
The town rises from the harbour towards the surrounding fields. The difference in level from the harbour to the top of the town is 25 metres. Sea, rocky coast, fields and forest surround Svaneke. The granite of this area is the characteristic coarse-grained kind called 'Svanekegranit'.
'Paradisbakkerne' by Nexø is an undulating rock landscape with a number of walking paths. Experience the rift valleys, the heathery raised bogs, the boulders and the peculiar vegetation of the area (8 km).
In the middle of Bornholm one of the most beautiful forests of the country, Almindingen, is situated. Different marked routes lead you through the forest, where you can experience the 162 metres high hill 'Rytterknægten', beautiful forest lakes and the largest rift valley of the island.
On the northern part of the island, by the fabulous nature area 'Hammerknuden', the scenic rocky coast, the rift valleys, the waterfalls and the rocky caves will impress you.
Follow the small path, which leads from the harbour of Svaneke through the cliffs, past forest, along the shore towards north to Listed. Bornholm is an ideal holiday destination if you wish to climb on cliffs or observe birds.
Golf players can try out no less than 3 courses on the island. The course of 'Nexø Golf Klub' in Rønne is the closest, but the courses of 'Nordbornholms Golf Klub' and 'Bornholms Golf Klub' are also recommendable.
Anglers will find good opportunities by the shore, on the sea as well in the lakes and streams of the island.
Mange lovely nature experiences await you along the 250 km good bicycle paths, from which the main part is traffic-free. Bicycles are for rent in Svaneke. Furthermore, a number of walking routes are available in the scenic and characteristic nature.
Visit the candle factory 'Svaneke Bolcher', which is situated in a 200 years old merchant's house on the square, and experience the manufacturing.
'JOBOLAND Brændesgårdshaven' in Svaneke is a former farm, but today a popular nature and amusement park with a unique profusion of flowers and numerous attractions.
In the park 'Bornholms Sommerfuglepark og Tropeland' by Nexø you can experience flowers, plants, lovely scents, birds and at least 1,000 colourful butterflies, which fly freely in a large, tropical glass house (9 km).
Melstedgård is an animated agricultural museum with houses, fields and stables, which is situated a couple of km south of Gudhjem (11 km).
The round churches are the landmarks of Bornholm. The characteristic and whitewashed churches, which are more than 800 years old, have served as defence, storage of supplies and as church houses. The 4 most famous churches are: Østerlars, Olsker, Nylars and Nyker.
'Oluf Høst Museum' has been established in the home of the artist in Gudhjem, and here you can experience his paintings (14 km).
'Bornholms Middelaldercenter' in Gudhjem is a historic experience centre with a live environment from the Middle Ages (the period 1350-1450) with people, animals, houses, water mills and a fortified castle mounds.
At the art museum 'Bornholms Kunstmuseum' works of famous Bornholm painters as well as theme exhibitions with art, design and handicraft can be observed (18 km).
'NaturBornholm' in Åkirkeby informs of the Bornholm nature ¿ right from the origination in the glowing lava more than 1 billion years ago (24 km).
Hammershus is an impressive old castle from around the year 1250, which rises from a steep rock hillock on the northern tip of Bornholm. Hammershus is the largest castle ruin in Northern Europe (34 km).
