Nexø is located on the eastern part of Bornholm, right by the Baltic, which provides the town with a fresh sea breeze. In the old part of Nexø you can still enjoy the beautiful and well-preserved half-timbered houses. At the cobbled square you can experience the tranquillity of the town and listen to the splashing sound of the fountain.
The harbour buzzes with activity, and here you will find all types of boats, fishmonger's, fashion shops, cafés, restaurants and cosy atmosphere.
Rocks occur at some places by the shore, but it is possible to use a springboard, which enables you to jump safely into the water. 2 km south of Nexø you will find the beach Balka Strand - one of the best and most popular beaches on Bornholm. The kilometres long beach is sheltered from the westerly wind. The wide sandy beach has shallow water and an inviting sandy bottom, which makes it very suitable for children.
It is possible to rent water cycles, deck chairs and surf equipment here. During the high season lifeguards watch the bathers on the beach. From the kiosk by the beach a long ramp leads all the way down to the waters edge, which makes it possible to bring a perambulator, wheel chair etc.
Rocky and sandy beaches, forests and plantations characterize the nature, surrounding Nexø. To the south of Nexø you will find an unbroken nature area, which leads to ‘Balkalyngen’ - Denmark’s only sandstone moor. The area contains a game preserve among other things. A low and well-hidden gazebo provides a good view of the wildlife and the shore.
The area Paradisbakkerne near Nexø is an undulating rock landscape with a number of walking paths. Experience rift valleys, calluna bogs, boulders and distinctive vegetation here.
Almindingen is the third largest forest in Denmark - a beautiful and varying forest, located in a highland with e.g. ponds and small lakes. Here you can also experience the 162 m high Rytterknægten - the highest point on Bornholm (21 km).
Anglers will have good opportunities for a catch in the sea and in the Put & Take fishpond Nexø Stenbrud. Fishing boats sails from the harbour of Nexø. The small reefs ‘Bro Rev’ and ‘Salthammer’ off the harbour of Snogebæk are very popular fishing spots near Nexø. Bornholm offers 3 18-hole golf courses, from which the golf course of Dueodde is the closest one (9 km). The three courses are very different, but all worth a visit.
Good nature experiences await you along the 250 km of good bicycle paths. The majority of the paths are traffic-free. A number of good walking paths are equally available in the distinctive nature. If you fancy rock climbing or bird observation you will also find that Bornholm is an ideal holiday destination.
At the old smokehouse of Nexø herring is still smoked in the old-fashioned manner. You can enjoy the smoked food on the spot or bring it home.
In Nexø you will find the childhood home of the author Martin Andersen Nexø. A small museum with photos, personal effects etc. has been established here.
The museum of Nexø is a regional museum, which has been established in an old warehouse. Here you can see old tools, wreckage, a fishing house and many other appliances.
Due to the many artists-craftsmen of the island it is possible to experience potteries and granite workshop in Nexø.
At Bornholms Sommerfuglepark in Nexø you can enjoy the sight of the beautiful tropical butterflies, the exotic plants and the colourful flowers.
JOBOLAND Brændesgårdshaven in Svaneke is a former farm, which has been turned into a popular nature and amusement park with a unique profusion of flowers and numerous activities (8 km).
NaturBornholm in Åkirkeby presents the story of the nature on Bornholm - right from the time when the island emerged more than 1 million years ago (14 km).
Bornholms Middelaldercenter in Gudhjem is a historical experience centre near the round church Østerlars. Here you get an idea of peasant life in the period 1350-1450. The centre is an active mediaeval environment with people, animals, houses, water mills and a fortified castle mounds (22 km).
Oluf Høst Museum in Gudhjem is an art museum with paintings of the former owner Oluf Høst.
The art museum Bornholms Kunstmuseum near Rø is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Bornholm. Here you will find works of famous local painters as well as theme exhibitions with art, design and handicraft (30 km).
