The bridge, Ravningbroen, was built by the Vikings under the king Harald Blåtand in the year 980. It was 760 metres long and crossed the river valley Vejle Ådal on the widest spot. This length was not surpassed until the old Little Belt Bridge was opened in 1935, nearly 1,000 years later. After the archaeological excavations around the bridge in the 1970’ies, the remains of the bridge were covered with dirt, and therefore it was not lost after the draining of the area, which is now preserved, as most of the 6 metres long oak poles of the Vikings are still placed under the surface of the earth. Some of the oak wood poles were drawn up and conserved, as you can see in the exhibition, which is established in the old station building on the spot. Right by the place, where the bridge, Ravningbroen, was standing, you can see a reconstruction of the bridge, which gives you a good idea of the dimensions in the impressive building. Free access.
