Vesterhede - holiday homes with thatched roofs on Rømø
Vesterhede is a small holiday house area, situated by the plantation 'Vråby Plantage' on the southern part of Rømø, about 1 km behind the shore. Forest, dunes and moor areas surround the holiday area Vesterhede. Solely gravel roads lead through the cosy and scenic area and almost all of the houses have thatched roofs. The area has a rich animal life and invites stays in the nature. You will also find many leisure activities, more restaurants and good shopping possibilities nearby. 3 km from here, Havneby offers a cosy harbour area and a quite unique and peaceful island harbour atmosphere. Rømø is connected with the mainland through a 10 km long dam. The lovely nature, the long wide and sandy beach, the Jutland Wadden Sea, the North Sea, the fresh sea breeze, the rich wildlife, the many birds, the well-preserved Rømø-farms and the cosy atmosphere makes Rømø an interesting holiday destination.
Beach The water of the eastern coast of Rømø is not suitable for swimming, but a small and sandy beach, which is suitable for sunbathing, is available by Kromose. Her you can enjoy the view of the Jutland Wadden Sea and perhaps find seashells. Around 7 km towards west you will find one of Europe's most lovely bathing beaches. On the 15 km long Lakolk Strand it is possible to drive your car all the way down to the waters edge. However, you will also find traffic-free areas in the northern and southern part of the beach. The fine, completely stone-free sandy beach has shallow water, a sandy bottom, dunes and Blue Flag. Therefore, it is very suitable for children. The beach invites beach activities of every kind. Windsurfing, kite buggy driving and flying with kites are very popular here. The difference between high and low tide is substantial, and twice a day the water level changes significantly. Therefore you are to be careful when you park your car close to the water.
Nature Vesterhede is situated by the plantation 'Vråby Plantage', which is a scenic forest area with hills, winding paths, the 18 m high viewpoint 'Stagebjerg', a marked walking path and a rich animal life, which consists of i.a. is available by Kromose. Sønderstrand is the southernmost corner of Rømø, and here a large dune dike protects the area from sand drift. Towards north you will find the plantation 'Kirkeby Plantage' with pines, a high viewpoint-dune as well as more bridle and walking paths. The plantation 'Tvismark Plantage' by the dam equally invites walking routes and a viewpoint. The northern part of the island has been laid out as a bird sanctuary for the many wading birds of the Jutland Wadden Sea. Seals also reside on the island, and within the later years more sperm whales have stranded on Rømø. Rømø consists of 90% nature landscapes with large areas, covered with heather, and dune plantations, where trees and bushes bear witness of the rough North Sea wind.
Activities The lovely nature areas, surrounding Vesterhede, invite walks and horseback riding. At 'Kommandørgården Wellnesscenter' by Østerhede you can pamper yourselves with steam baths, Turkish hamam baths, massage, light therapy, zone therapy, facial treatment etc. (2 km). By the riding centre with Iceland ponies 'Rømø Islændercenter', by the wellness centre, both beginners and experienced riders can join a ride in the forest, in the dunes, in the marsh, on the beach and over the moors. 'Rømø Minigolf', just south of Østerhede, offers 18 different courses, petanque and a croquet-course (2 km). The wide beach 'Lakolk Strand' invites activities like surfing, kite flying, kitebuggy driving, walks and horseback riding. Furthermore, you are able to walk on the sea floor - without getting wet - and find interesting things, brought in by the tide. The lovely fishpond 'Rømø Lystfiskerparadis' in Juvre is easily accessible, also with a pushchair and a wheelchair (9 km).
Worth a visit Rømø Sommerland by Østerby is an amusement and activity park with more than 40 different activities, f.x. water world and minigolf course (2 km). The doll museum 'Danmarks Mekaniske Dukkemuseum' by Østerby exhibits up to 150 years old figures. The nature centre 'Naturcenter Tønnisgård' by Tvismark is established in an old Rømø-farm with thatched roof and displays an exhibition about the nature and culture of Rømø (5 km). The national museum 'Kommandørgården' by Toftum is a restored farm from 1748, showing the prosperity, which was brought to Rømø by the commodores (8 km). Denmark's oldest and smallest school is also situated by Toftum. The historic school was used in the years 1784-1874. I In Juvre you can experience a garden fence, which was made out of whale jaws in 1772 (9 km). Rømø Mini Museum in Lakolk informs about the nature of Rømø and the influence of the tide throughout the years (10 km). Rømø is rich in craftsmen, galleries, candle factories and potteries.
Excursion spots Skærbæk Museum is a regional museum, which has been established in a former merchant's house from 1909. The culture and history of the district is illustrated here (22 km). On the 920 m long track in Skærbæk Gokart Center you can challenge each other and experience speed and excitement. The leisure centre Skærbæk Fritidscenter contains a swimming baths with i.a. water slide, springboards, hot water pools and a sauna. Step into the world of the iron age in the park Hjemsted Oldtidspark. The centre contains a museum, an iron age farm, graves, underground passages etc. (23 km). Play viking for a day at the viking centre 'Lustrupholm VikingeCenter' in Denmark's oldest town Ribe, and meet with the blacksmiths, bow makers, weavers and cooks of the viking age and see their families and homes (41 km). Treat the family to a day of fun, speed and excitement in the amusement park 'Sommerland Syd' in Tinglev. Here you will find i.a. action park, water world and an animal park (65 km).
