Toftum - large holiday homes in Rømø's best bicycle area
 Toftum is a quiet and cosy holiday house area, situated 1 km north of the dam in scenic surroundings. Toftum is surrounded by heathery areas and situated right between Rømø's northernmost holiday area Juvre and the 10 km long dam, which connects Rømø with the mainland and the west coast of Jutland. Large holiday houses and gravel roads characterize the holiday house area. A recent bicycle path leads right past Toftum and by following this, you are led all around the island. By Toftum you will find the national museum 'Kommandørgården' and Denmark's smallest and oldest school. It is possible to buy groceries in the area, and about 3 km from here, Kongsmark offers a larger selection of shops and restaurants.
The lovely nature, the long and sandy beach, the fresh sea breeze, the rich wildlife, the many birds, the well-preserved Rømø-farms and the cosy atmosphere makes Rømø an interesting holiday destination.
Beach
The 15 km long beach 'Lakolk Strand' stretches from Juvre in the north to Sønderstrand in the south. It is possible to drive your car all the way down to the waters edge, however mainly near Juvre. The fine, completely stone-free sandy beach has shallow water, a sandy bottom, dunes and Blue Flag. Therefore, it is very suitable for children. The beach is rather unusual because of its width - between 1.5 and 6 km - which invites beach activities of every kind. Activities like windsurfing, kite buggy driving and flying with kites are very popular here.
The difference between high and low tide is substantial, and twice a day the water level changes significantly. Therefore you are to be careful when you park your car close to the water.
Nature
Toftum is surrounded by a diversified nature with level heathery areas as well as undulating areas with trees. The northern part of the island is generally characterized by grassy dunes, heathery areas, bird areas, a rich animal life and many walking paths. The northernmost part of the island has been laid out as a bird sanctuary for the many wading birds of the Jutland Wadden Sea. Seals also reside on the island, and within the later years more sperm whales have stranded on Rømø ø.
'Høstbjerg' - the highest point on Rømø - is situated app. 1 km south of Toftum. 'Høstbjerg' lies about 20 metres above sea level, and from here you can enjoy a scenic view of the lovely island.
Rømø consists of 90% nature landscapes with large areas, covered with heather, and dune plantations, where trees and bushes bear witness of the rough North Sea wind. All over the island you can experience a rich population of birds and animals.
Activities
Around Toftum you can walk along the many paths in the scenic surroundings.
In Juvre you will find the fishpond 'Rømø Lystfiskerparadis'. The lovely pond is easily accessible, also with a pushchair and a wheelchair (1 km).
The wide beach 'Lakolk Strand' invites activities like surfing, kite flying, kitebuggy driving, walks and horseback riding. Furthermore, you are able to walk on the sea floor - without getting wet. You can rent riding horses many places on the island (Iceland ponies, ponies and horses).
The kite festival, which always takes place in the first weekend of September, is a recommendable sight. See the countless kites in all kinds of shapes and colours.
In Skærbæk on the mainland you can try out the 920 m long go-cart track or visit the swimming baths with i.a. water slide, boards, hot water pools and sauna in Skærbæk Fritidscenter (16 km).
Golf players can try out the courses at Arrild Golf Club (30 km), Ribe Golf Klub (36 km) and Toftlund Golf Club (37 km).
Worth a visit
Denmark's oldest and smallest school is situated by Toftum. The historic school was used in the years 1784-1874
By Toftum you will also find the national museum 'Kommandørgården', which is a restored farm from 1748, showing the prosperity, which was brought to Rømø by the commodores.
The village is characterized by the distinctive, old and well-preserved Rømø farms with beautiful doors (1 km). In Juvre you can also experience a garden fence, which was made out of whale jaws in 1772
The nature centre 'Naturcenter Tønnisgård' by Tvismark is established in an old Rømø-farm with thatched roof and displays an exhibition about the nature and culture of Rømø (2 km).
Rømø Mini Museum in Lakolk informs about the nature of Rømø and the influence of the tide throughout the years (5 km).
Rømø Sommerland by Østerby is an amusement and activity park with more than 40 different activities, f.x. water world and minigolf course (8 km).
Excursion spots
All over the island you will find beautiful, old Rømø farms, which characterize the landscape and is very distinguished for the island. Rømø is also rich in craftsmen, galleries, candle factories and potteries.
Skærbæk Museum is a regional museum, which is established in a former merchant's house from the year 1909. The culture and history of the district is illustrated here (16 km).
Step into the world of the iron age in the park Hjemsted Oldtidspark, close to Skærbæk. The centre contains a museum, an iron age farm, graves and underground passages among other things (18 km).
Visit the culture town Løgumkloster and go exploring in the interesting convent, erected by monks in the 12th. century (35 km).
Pretend to be viking for a day at the viking centre 'Lustrupholm VikingeCenter' in Denmark's oldest town Ribe, and meet with the blacksmiths, bow makers, weavers and cooks of the viking age and see their families and homes (34 km).
