Sønderho is a small and well-preserved fishing village with beautiful thatched houses at the most southern point of the island Fanø.
13 kilometres south of the ferry town Nordby, the cosy green village Sønderho with its preserved, old thatched houses is situated. Here you will find peace and quiet. The town is famous for its church, the inn, the museum `Hannes Hus', the art museum 'Fanø Kunstmuseum', the mill and not least the scenic nature, the lovely 18 km long beach and sea, surrounding the town. The town has more shops and restaurants.
Beach Fanø has one of Denmark's best beaches - an 18 km long, wide, clean, white and sandy beach with dunes that provide shelter is situated right at Sønderho. The beach is also very suitable for children, has Blue Flag, clear water and a sandy bottom. At Fanø the North Sea and the Jutland Wadden Sea meet. Due to the difference in water level during high and low tide, the possibilities of finding amber on the beach are very good. Furthermore are walks, swimming, surfing and kite flying very popular activities here.
Nature
Dikes, marsh, fields, dunes, moor covered in heather, beach, the North Sea and The Jutland Wadden Sea surround Sønderho on the southern point of Fanø. Here the nature is unspoiled and the island has a rich wildlife and an abundance of birds. More rare bird species can be seen here and the growing seal population can be observed on the sand banks at the coast. The dune plantation Fanø Klitplantage is situated in the centre of the island, and here you will find 3 marked walking paths and a forest playground with a bbq.
Activities Golf players can make use of the scenic seaside golf course behind the very first range of dunes in Nordby. At the Put & Take fishpond in Rindby anglers can haul trout. Lovely nature experiences await you along the many bicycle and walking paths. The forest playground in Fanø Klitplantage appeals to both children and adults. Furthermore, it is possible to surf, bowl, play tennis, ride on horses, play minigolf and visit a water world on the island.
Worth a visit
Hannes Hus is a modest Sønderho home from the 18th century, which is well-preserved and almost intact. The mill in Sønderho was also build in the 18th century, and today the mill creates a basis for many activities and flour is still milled here. The art and the relics of culture can be experienced in the many museums, i.a. the art museum `Fanø Kunstmuseum' in Sønderho. The old life saving station from the year 1889 is preserved and informs about the region and tells the story about the Danish life-saving service. Many artists and craftsmen inhabit the island, and you can f.x. visit an amber cutter in Sønderho.
Excursion spots Fanø Museum is established in a typical Fanø house in Nordby, and her you can gain an experience of how the people lived here 300 years ago (13 km). The collection `Fanø Skibsfarts- og Dragtsamling' in Nordby exhibits a comprehensive collection of sailing ships and costumes as well as 2 intact living rooms from an old home of a ship owner. Visit the `capital' of western Jutland, the town Esbjerg, and experience a vivid commercial and cultural life, the galleries and the many museums. It is also possible to take a harbour excursion with Scandlines from both Fanø and Esbjerg. LEGOLAND is build out of 50 million toy bricks. More than 50 activities provide you with speed, excitement and experiences!
