Bovbjerg is art atmosphere, clean air, spectacular cliffs and an exceptional view of the North Sea.
Bovbjerg is situated right next to the village Ferring, 10 km south of the holiday area Vejlby Klit and 14 km west of the commercial town Lemvig. Bovbjerg is a quiet and popular holiday area with a rich artistic life, a museum, a gallery as well as a few shops and restaurants. The 26 m high red lighthouse Bovbjerg Fyr is located right at the steep cliffs. The lighthouse is the highest point of the area, and from here it is possible to see as far as 35 km away. In this area you can fish, swim, hike, drive your bicycle, fly with a kite, hang glide, paraglide or visit museums.
Beach The beach is a wide sandy beach with 30-40 m high cliffs. Stairs lead down to the beach. Flying with kites, hang gliding, paragliding and flying with small model planes are popular activities on this windy beach. It is not allowed, or possible, to bring your car to the beach here.
Nature
The characteristic steep slopes at Bovbjerg stretch over about 3.5 km. All along the coast the spectacular views of the sea can be enjoyed while walking, riding a bike or driving in a car. At the large wetlands around the 5 km long lake Ferring Sø, situated right north of Bovbjerg, you will find a substantial flock of birds. The distance between the North Sea and the lake Ferring Sø is no more than 1.5 km. The 6.7 hectares large plantation Klosterhede Plantage, containing forest, open moor areas and stream valleys, is located 10 km inland from the coast.
Activities The area invites walks on the beach, along the cliffs and around the lake Ferring Sø. The possibilities of hikes and bicycle rides are good here. One of the most popular walking routes 'udsigtsruten' (the route of views) begins in the town Ferring, leads you along the edge of the cliff, past the lighthouse Bovbjerg Fyr, to the church of Trans and back along the beach. Because of the high cliffs hang gliding and paragliding are very popular activities here. Anglers have good possibilities for a haul in the sea, in the inlet as well as in the fishpond Vejlby Klit Fiskesø. Rent for example your own boat and sail on the lake Ferring Sø. Furthermore, it is possible to surf in the area.
Worth a visit
Bovbjerg has always been characterized by a rich artistic life. The gallery 'Det Gule Hus' shows an exhibition of oil paintings, watercolour paintings, graphics, sculptures, and pottery a.s.o. At the glass gallery `Glashytten¿ you can see a comprehensive glass exhibition and the gallery `Pegasus' shows an exhibition of paintings from the area. An interesting miniature museum informs of the history of the area. The museum has been established in a couple of the beautiful old houses that used to belong to the coastal inspectorate. The 26 metres high red lighthouse in Bovbjerg is the highest point of the area, and from here it is possible to see as far as 35 km away. West of the lighthouse you can see an unusually well-preserved grave mound 'Hesthøj' from the bronze ages. The museum of Jens Søndergaard is situated at the edge of the cliff in Ferring. The small village also contains a geologic miniature museum, a few shops and a small romantic church.
Excursion spots In the park 'Vejlby Sommerpark' you can angle, rent riding horses, drive on front bikes, play minigolf and visit the animals in the pet zoo of the park. Its red tiled roofs and old cobbled streets characterize the old, pretty provincial town, Ringkøbing. The town is situated about 58 km from Bovbjerg and is definitely worth a visit. The commercial town Holstebro is situated 56 km away and has a number of interesting specialist shops and good shopping possibilities in the traffic-free town centre. Furthermore, the town offers plenty of art and culture, cosy cafes and a beautiful environment around the stream. The open-air museum `Hjerl Hede Frilandsmuseum' near Vinderup is an interesting and lifelike museum for the whole family. See among other things how the daily life in the country 150 years ago is vitalized. The flower park 'Jesperhus Blomsterpark' on the Liim Fiord island Mors also offers a jungle zoo and a play land. The park is one of the largest of its kind in Scandinavia.
