The small, peaceful and idyllic island Årø is situated in the Little Belt - just south of the mouth of the inlet 'Haderslev Fjord'.
 A 7-minutes sail brings you from Årøsund on the mainland to the small ferry berth on the island Årø. The island is a popular holiday destination for nature lovers and anglers, who wish to enjoy a relaxing holiday with peace and quiet. The landscape of the island is completely level and offers a rich animal life. The town of Årø is an idyllic village environment with idyllic and winding streets as well as houses with thatched roofs. The village, the cosy and active fishing harbour and marina, the old graves and long barrows from the stone age, the stone fences, the sunken roads, the shopping possibilities as well as the good bathing beaches contribute to making Årø an attractive holiday destination.
Beach
Årø offers two good bathing beaches. On the southern part of the island, you will find a beach with shallow water, which is very suitable for children, and the other beach is located in the lagoon near the harbour of Årø. Windsurfers will find good conditions along the beaches.
Nature
 Årø covers about 2,400 hectares and the highest point is situated only 6 metres above sea level. It is possible to walk the 10 km around the island. In spite of the size of the island, you will find an amazingly varying nature and a very rich vegetation and animal life. The peninsular on the eastern side of Årø 'Årø Kalv' is a 30 hectares large bird sanctuary, which is open to visitors outside the breeding season. Besides the bird life, rich vegetation also characterizes the area.
The scenic landscape invites long walks, and if you walk along the southern shore of the island, you may experience porpoise gambol in the water near the shore.
Activities
Årø is popular place for anglers, as it is possible to fish almost everywhere along the 10 km long shore.
The water and wind conditions around Årø provide windsurfers with good opportunities - whether you are experienced or a beginner.
The combination of both deep and shallow waters around the island enables divers of all levels to have great diving experience.
Worth a visit
 Enjoy a walk through the idyllic village environment. The narrow streets, the houses with thatched roofs, the stone fences, the sunken roads and the many relics bear witness of the habitations on the island throughout many periods.
From Årø you can go to Jutland in no more than 7 minutes and visit f.x. the beautiful, old marked town Haderslev. Here you will find a cosy pedestrian street, many green recreational areas, an old part of town with gently restored houses, more interesting museums and collections as well as the beautiful cathedral.
Excursion spots
The valley 'Haderslev Tunneldal', just south of Haderslev, contains the valley 'Tunneldalen', the forest 'Pamhule Skov' and the animal park 'Dyrehaven'. The animal park 'Dyrehaven' is a 100 hectares large, scenic area with forest, open grassy areas and meadows. About 100 fallow deer live in the park. The scenic forest 'Pamhule Skov' is a 300 hectares large forest with a rich animal life and many hills and slopes. In the valley 'Tunneldalen' you will find 4 marked walking routes as well as a number of paths, which enable you to experience the unique nature on foot and on bicycle.
'Sommerland Syd' in Tinglev is the largest amusement park in South Jutland. Here you will find action, speed and excitement for both children and adults (60 km).
LEGOLAND is build out of 50 million toy bricks. More than 50 activities provide you with speed, excitement and experiences! LEGOLAND offers knights in armaments, pirates, tough cowboys, wild Indians and much more (86 km).
