Hornbæk is a modern holiday town with a lovely bathing beach, a marina, restaurants and shops.
Hornbæk is a former fishing village, and the old houses as well as the harbour bear witness of this. The lovely and cosy harbour today is a modern marina, where yachts and small fishing boats lie side by side. The marina is well-attended and situated right next to the beach. In Hornbæk and the immediate vicinity you will find a number of leisure activities and sights for the whole family. The beautiful forest 'Hornbæk Plantage' is situated by the lake 'Hornbæk Sø' and a path leads from the forest to the beach. Hornbæk offers many shops with groceries, fashion etc as well as more good restaurants and cafés.
Beach The beach of Hornbæk is a magnificent bathing beach with fine sand, shallow water, high dunes and Blue Flag. The beach is very suitable for children. During the summer, lifeguards keep an eye out for the bathers. Beach activities like water cycling, beach volley and windsurfing are popular here. The harbour of Hornbæk is situated behind the beach, and the piers make sure that the beach only has fine sand.
Nature
Sea, lakes, fields and forests characterize the landscape, surrounding Hornbæk. The undulating terrain provides you with more good viewpoints. The beautiful forest 'Hornbæk Plantage' has a rich vegetation and animal life as well as many marked walking and bicycle paths. The lake 'Hornbæk Sø' is surrounded by buildings and a park, and it is possible to cycle or walk around the lake. The scenic landscape 'Rusland' equally invites walks. In North Zealand you will also find two of Denmark's largest lakes, 'Arresø' and 'Esrum Sø', as well as the beautiful forest 'Gribskov', which is one of the largest deciduous forests in the country.
Activities The many nature areas, surrounding Hornbæk, contains a network of marked walking and bicycle routes. In Hornbæk or the immediate vicinity you can play minigolf, tennis and golf, rent riding horses and boats, windsurf, drive in horse drawn carriage or vintage train, play handball or beach volley as well as angle. 6 of Denmark's prime golf courses are situated in North Sealand. Anglers will find good fishing opportunities from the shores, in the Put & Take fishponds of the area, from a rented dinghy or on the sea onboard a fishing vessel.
Worth a visit The art museum 'Hornbæk Kunstmuseum' is a cultural rendezvous with changing art exhibitions. At the museum 'Rudolf Tegners Museum' in Dronningmølle the plaster and marble sculptures of the sculptor Tegner are exhibited. 'Munkeruphus' is a preserved and idyllically situated country house, which is used for displaying art, handicraft, design, architecture and theme exhibitions. Until the year 1870 barrels of pistols and rifles were manufactured in the mill 'Hammermøllen'. Today the restored watermill function as a museum. The old Cistercian convent 'Esrum Kloster' from the year 1151 has a beautiful convent garden and a small convent pharmacy. The convent is scenically situated by the lake 'Esrum Sø'. In North Sealand you will find more interesting castles. With its towers and spires the castle 'Frederiksborg Slot' looks like something out of a fairy-tale. The castle 'Fredensborg Slot' is the summer residence of the Queen Margrethe.
Excursion spots The marked town Helsingør by the 'gate' of the sound 'Øresund' contains a cosy, old quarter and the beautiful castle 'Kronborg Slot', which is one of Northern Europe's most significant Renaissance castles (12 km). Opposite Hornbæk you can catch a glimpse of the shores of Scania. A 20 minutes sail brings you to the coast of Sweden. The museum of Karen Blixen at the estate 'Rungstedlund' has been established with galleries, exhibitions, the private living rooms of Karen Blixen, a slide department, a library and a café. Louisiana in Humlebæk is a museum for modern art. The unique museum buildings and the beautiful old park create interesting settings for the art. Experience the capital Copenhagen with the vivid culture life, museums, music, theatres, galleries, the pedestrian street 'Strøget' and sights like the Tivoli, a planetarium, the art museum 'Carlsberg Glyptotek', the castle 'Rosenborg Slot' with the crown jewels, København Zoo and much more (45 km).
