Skallerup is the soul of beautiful nature, North Sea, inland dunes and cosy holiday homes.
The roaring sea, the wide sandy beach, the fresh sea air and the large conservation areas with the characteristic landscape make Skallerup an extremely attractive holiday destination. In addition to the nature, the area also offers a large number of leisure activities for everyone in the family. Furthermore, many artists inhabit the area, and you can often visit them in their workshops and galleries. Within a short distance from the recreational holiday area, you will find many of northwestern Jutland's holiday resorts, commercial towns, amusements and sights. It is possible to dine and shop in the area, and if you wish to choose from a larger selection, you can visit the nearby idyllic fishing hamlet Lønstrup - an evocative seaside resort with galleries, shops, restaurants etc. (5 km).
Beach The lovely, wide and sandy beach of Skallerup has been awarded with the Blue Flag and invites swimming, sun bathing, walks as well as various beach and watersport activities. The nice and quiet bathing beach with sheltering dunes is also popular among the locals, Outside the summer season the beach is also suitable for long walks. After a storm it is possible to find amber on the beach once in a while. The sunset over the North Sea is an experience not to be missed.
Nature The sea and the wind have created the impressive inland dunes behind Skallerup, and this rare, preservation-worthy landscape has been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. There is public access to the area - however, you have to follow the marked paths. The landscape behind Skallerup is equally characterized by slightly hilly moor landscapes with heather and rose hips, forest and agricultural land.
Activities The landscape is cut out for walks and rides. You will f.x. find more marked walking paths in the inland dunes Skallerup Indlandsklitter. It is possible to rent riding horses in the area. You can fish from the shore, in the streams of the hinterland or in one of the Put & Take fishponds of the area. More golf courses are available in northwestern Jutland, and the nearest one belongs to Vennebjerg Golfklub, which is located between Hjørring and Lønstrup. Here you will find northern Jutland's largest Pay & Play course with no less than 12 holes (5 km).
Worth a visit Experience the charming holiday resort Lønstrup with its small streets, shops, cafés, ice cream stalls and restaurants. Lønstrup is famous for its many artists, painters, sculptors, potters and glassblowers, and you can visit them in their workshops and experience the creation of handicraft. In the outskirts of Lønstrup the fishing boats are still dragged up on the beach every day after use (5 km). Outside Lønstrup you will find the church Mårup Kirke - very close to the water's edge, which moves even closer every year. From the beautifully restored mill Vennebjerg Mølle you can enjoy the magnificent view of the sea and the area (5 km). Near Nr. Rubjerg you can experience Rubjerg Knude - a 90-m high hill island, created during the last ice age. The lighthouse of the hill island 'Rubjerg Knude Fyr' is partly buried in sand (11 km). The cosy market town Hjørring offers a pedestrian street with specialist shops, interesting museums, a manor house and more mediaeval buildings (13 km).
Excursion spots In Family Farm Fun Park in Vittrup you can stroke and feed the animals of the petting zoo, ride on ponies, drive on small tractors, try out water cycles on a lake and picnic in scenic surroundings (16 km). The aquarium Nordsømuseet in Hirtshals contains Europe's largest saltwater aquarium: Ocenariet, which holds 4.5 million litres of water. Here you can experience about 60 different fish species from the North Sea and even touch some of them (22 km). Behind Løkken you can visit Børglum Kloster - a beautiful, old monastery from the 1180'ies with atmosphere, exhibitions, a church and parklike surroundings (20 km). In the amusement park Fårup Sommerland & Aquapark you can try out more than 50 entertainments for the whole family, including Denmark's largest aquapark and Denmark's longest switchback Falken (32 km). In Tuen near Tversted you can visit the eagle sanctuary Ørnereservatet. Come close to some of the world's greatest eagle species and watch them being fed in the air (40 km).
