The active commercial town with both a ferry harbour and a marina is encircled by scenic nature and lovely beaches.
The town of Tordenskjold, Frederikshavn, is situated right by the Kattegat and behind the town, scenic and undulating forest areas characterize the nature. A drive to the top of the hills behind Frederikshavn and towards Sæby (through Understed and Bangsbo) provides you with a magnificent view of the water, the harbour, the town and the landscape. Visit the cosy old part of town 'Fiskerklyngen' with the cobbled streets and the yellow houses with reed roofs and the hollyhock in front. Frederikshavn offers good shopping possibilities and many good restaurants. Try f.x. a 'Frederikshavner' - a large fried plaice.
Beach You will find good, sandy bathing beaches on both sides of the town. Right north of town, Denmark's only palm beach has been established. Here you can also make use of a beach volley course. At the local beach 'Nordstrand' the water is shallow and therefore it is suitable for children. Dunes shelter the beach. From here you can enjoy the view of the 7 islands 'Hirsholmene'. The beach of Bratten is a good, wide and sandy beach with dunes and Blue Flag. The parking conditions by the beach are good, and a long ramp makes it possible to bring a wheel chair and a perambulator to the beach. The beach is suitable for children as the water is shallow by the waters edge (10 km towards north).
Nature
Behind the town the wooded hills with more viewpoints are located. From the viewpoints you have a unique view of the town and the sea. For example is the view from 'Pikkerbakken', which lies 71 metres above sea level, amazing. 'Bangsbo Skovene' is a beech forest of about 100 hectares with a rich animal and bird life. In the river valley 'Bangsbo Ådal' a number of bird species can be observed at all times of the year. 'Hirsholmene' is Denmark's northernmost group of islands. The islands are preserved and make an ideal breeding place for many sea birds. From the hill 'Øksnebjerg' (95 metres above sea level) you have a good view of the sea and all the way to Sæby.
Activities In Frederikshavn you can play tennis, squash, minigolf as well as bowl and windsurf. The town also offers more swimming baths and water worlds. Anglers can throw in the line from the piers and the beaches of the area, but you will also find more Put & Take fishponds here. Golf players can try out 3 nearby courses by Frederikshavn Golf Klub, Sæby Golfklub (14 km) and Sindal Golf Klub (21 km).
