Vilsted Sø
|
The lake Vilsted Sø in the river valley Bjørnsholm Ådal was drained for more than 100 years and today, it is Denmark's second largest nature restoration project. In the summer of 2006 a beautiful nature area of 913 ha (app. 10 km2) was resurrected. The area consists of nature meadows - both wet and dry - with grazing cattle, marshes, willow scrubs and North Jutland's largest fresh-water lake: the 450 ha Vilsted Sø. The area is open to the public and offers rare plants and insects as well as a number of birds, fish, mammals and amphibians. You can walk, cycle or ride along the 22 km paths, and furthermore, boat bridges and gazebos are available by the lake. You can sail in canoe and kayak in the western side of the lake - however, only after the breeding season of the birds. Vilsted Sø is a recreational and very scenic area - a nature experience in a class of its own for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers.
