The gigantic jars Roskildekrukkerne are the latest landmark, symbolizing Roskilde. The jars are created by the artist Peter Brandes, are 5 metres high and weigh together app. 24 tons. The jars are situated in a water basin and are illuminated from the water in the evenings. According to the artists the jars are a symbol of life and death, as they are used for storage of food as well as for cinerary urns. A poem by Henrik Nordbrandt has been engraved in one of the jars, and it deals with Roskilde and Queen Margrethe I of Denmark. The jars are provided with the names of all employees of the company, which donated the jars to Roskilde on the occasion of its 1,000-years jubilee, as well as the names of the workers, who created the jars.
