Bogense, town of the mermaids, offers genuine idyll on the north coast of Funen.
The 700-years old marked town Bogense is situated on the north coast of Funen, directly by the waters edge, and with a view to the unspoilt island Æbleø. The idyllic town is very charming with its old part of town, the beautiful old houses and merchant's houses, the statue 'Manneken Pis', the church, the winding alleys and the brook 'Bybækken', which meanders through the town, the picturesque harbour and the large, evocative marina. You will find good shopping possibilities, a number of restaurants, leisure activities and more cultural sights in Bogense.
Beach The beach 'Marinastranden' by Bogense Marina has some of the clearest water in the country. It has fine sand and shallow water by the edge, which makes the beach very suitable for children. The 18,000 m2 recently established beach bar has the Blue Flag, small bays, separated by stone dikes, and offers good possibilities for various beach activities like bathing, sunbathing, beach volley and walks. Equally, the conditions for surfers are good by the marina beach.
Nature
The nature, surrounding Bogense, is characterized by beach, coast, salt meadows with pasturing cows, forest areas, fields and green recreational areas. By Mosegård you will find the highest point of the area, which lays 35 metres above sea level, and from here you can see all the way to the bridge of the Little Belt towards west (8 km). The area also has more lakes, which are abounding in fish, and some very scenic marshes like f.x. Langemosen, Eskelund Mose and Runde Mose. Søndersø - a lovely, hilly and wooded landscape, which is very suitable for hikes, is situated south-east of Bogense (15 km). The forest 'Langesøskovene' is a popular excursion spot, and here you will find the estate and the lake of the same name 'Langesø' as well as a small chapel, where it is very popular among bridal pairs to get married. It is possible to walk all the way around the 1,200 metres long lake (19 km).
Activities Bogense offers a variety of leisure activities like f.x. swimming baths, minigolf, tennis courts as well as bicycle- and boat rental. Furthermore, you can rent riding horses in the area. From the harbour in Bogense you can sail out to the islands Samsø and Endelave. By the shores of Bogense as well as on the island Æbleø, the fishing opportunities are very good. If you feel like going deep-sea fishing, you can go out with the ship 'M/S Castor' from the harbour of Bogense. You can also try out the fish ponds 'Bogense Lystfiskersø', right by Bogense Marina, 'Mosegaardens Put & Take' by Sdr. Esterbølle (11 km) or 'Lindegårdens Put & Take' by Otterup (27 km). Golf players have more options close to Bogense. You will find the nearest courses by 'Odense Eventyr Golf' and 'Odense Golfklub' (about 30 km), 'Blommenslyst Golfklub' (33 km), 'Golfklubben Lillebælt Lundebjerggård' by Middelfart (33 km) and 'Vestfyns Golfklub' in Glamsbjerg (37 km).
Worth a visit
With its marked town atmosphere, old squares, winding roads, fine merchant¿s houses and many half-timbers houses, the picturesque harbour and the largest marina in Funen, Bogense is an attraction in itself. 'Bogense Trækunst' offers a large selection of Danish wooden handicraft. In 'Galleri M' graphics, paintings and sculptures are exhibited. At 'Nordfyns Museum' you can learn about the family history of the area and see archaeological treasures. The statue 'Manneken Pis' is a copy of the original in Brussels. Denmark's smallest house of only 23 m2 is situated in the middle of the square. The beautiful white mill 'Stegø Mølle' is located by the dam on the eastern outskirts of the town. The castle 'Harridslevgaard Slot' is partially open to the public and contains i.a. a mediaeval cellarage with a dungeon and a secret stairway (3 km). The property 'Gyldensteen Gods' is scenically situated between large forest and nature area, close to the water (4 km).
Excursion spots The preserved island Æbleø is situated in the Kattegat, north of Bogense. The island has a quite unique nature, and you can experience it along the 7 km long walking paths, which leads you around the island. At the art museum 'Kunstgården' in Skovby you can see interesting and diversified art - right from paintings to pottery and wooden art (8 km). The interesting toy museum 'Fyns Legetøjsmuseum' is situated in Morud (19 km). At the terrarium in Vissenbjerg you can experience Scandinavia's largest terrarium with reptiles and amphibian from all over the world (25 km). 'Fun Park Fyn' in Aarup is a water world and amusements for the whole family. When the entry has been paid for, all activities are free (25 km). Visit the home town of H.C. Andersen, Odense, a modern and evocative town with a number of leisure potentialities (30 km). Odense also offers 'Odense Zoo', the open-air museum 'Den Fynske Landsby', the home of H.C. Andersen and the railway museum 'Danmarks Jernbanemuseum'.
