The old, beautiful market town and shipping town Assens is situated by the Little Belt in scenic surroundings.
 The 800-years old western Funen town is a peaceful oasis. Assens has one of Denmark's most beautiful cobbled streets. In the charming and very well-preserved town centre you will find merchant's houses and gable house in timber frames. But Assens also has modern buildings, shops, restaurants, a cosy and evocative marina as well as a number of interesting galleries, museums and collections. The town is surrounded by coast as well as a lovely, quiet and varied nature with fields and forest. From Assens you can sail out to the small cosy island Bågø.
Beach
A number of good bathing beaches are available both north and south of Assens.
The lovely, wide and sandy beach 'Saltofte Strand' is situated only a few km south of Assens.
A good beach, which is also suitable for children, is available by Aborg, a couple of km towards north.
The beaches 'Feddet Strand', 'Mariendal Strand' and 'Assens Næs' are all lovely beaches, which are also suitable for children.
Equally, a good beach with shallow water is available by Sandager Næs, 12 km north of Assens. From this beach you can enjoy the view of 'Emtekær Nor', which is an interesting marsh area with a rich bird life.
Windsurfers will find good conditions by Assens.
Nature
 In the middle of Assens you will find a forest grounds with a lovely forest lake, which you can walk around.
The Little Belt and a slightly undulating landscape with lovely views, vast fields, winding roads as well as forest areas surround Assens.
The meadow area 'Emtekær Nor' with the rich bird life lies about 13 km north of Assens and is visible from the beach 'Sandager Næs'.
About 15 km south-east of Assens you will find the peninsula Helnæs, which is famous for its beautiful, varying and unspoiled nature. The 3 most significant nature areas are: Bobakkerne, Helnæs Made and Feddet. This area contains some of Denmark's best preserved grave mounds from the stone age.
'Jordløse Bakker' by Damsbo is a scenic nature area with a rich vegetation and animal life.
The beautiful forest 'Krengerup Skove' by Glamsbjerg offers more marked walking and bicycle routes (18 km).
Activities
Assens offers a variety of leisure activities. It is possible to bowl as well as play tennis and minigolf in the town. In the forest grounds you can walk around the forest lake or play chess on a giant outdoor chessboard.
It is a very popular activity to drive on a cycle trolley in this area. The route begins and ends in Assens and leads you by vigorous landscapes, fields, forests and small towns. Along the route you can see i.a. the church of Dreslette, the bay 'Helnæs Bugten' and the old fishing hamlet Torø Huse.
Anglers have good possibilities for a haul along the shores by the Little Belt and in the Put & Take fishponds of the area.
Golf players can choose between many courses on Funen. The closest courses are the ones by 'Vestfyns Golfklub' close to Glamsbjerg (14 km), 'Fåborg Golfklub' (34 km) and 'Golfklubben Lillebælt' close to Middelfart (40 km).
Worth a visit
 The old marked town is an attraction in itself with its beautiful cobbled street, the merchant¿s houses and half-timbered houses. In 'Assens Miniby' you can experience Assens around the year 1900 - in a miniature scale.
The museum 'Ernst's Samlinger' contains all sorts of interesting things, which were brought home from journeys by the manufacturer F. Ernst.
'Mands Samling', a culture-historical museum, has been established in an evocative merchant's house.
In the childhood home of the naval and war hero Peter Willemoes, the museum 'Willemoesgårdens Mindestuer' shows a collection of ship's models, paintings, figureheads and weapons.
In 'Vedstårup Veteranbilmuseum' you can see more than 60 historical and gently restored cars.
The beautiful Funen manor house 'Gl. Alvernæs' and the mediaeval castle 'Hagenskov' are situated by Ebberup (6 km).
Excursion spots
A small ferry sails daily from Assens to the island Bågø - an idyllic and scenic island. Bågø is famous for its large, well-preserved farms and characterized by lovely nature, peace and quiet. A cosy marina is situated by the ferry berth.
On the Skoda museum in Glamsbjerg you can hear the story of the car from 1937 and until today (14 km).
'Vestfyns Hjemstavnsgård' by Gummerup is an open-air museum, where you can enjoy half-timbered buildings, household effects, domestic utensils and farm tools from the years 1750-1950 (17 km).
'Fun Park Fyn' in Aarup is a water world and amusements for the whole family (19 km).
Visit the terrarium in Vissenbjerg. Here in the largest terrarium in Scandinavia you will meet with reptile and amphibian from the whole world (24 km).
'Frydenlund Fuglepark' by Tommerup is a lovely nature park with 700 birds from all over the world, waterholes, aviaries and a 2 km long walking path, which leads you under large old trees and out on the open savannah (25 km).
