Gjerrild is an idyllic village, surrounded by forest and beach, in the north-eastern corner of Djursland.
The cosy village Gjerrild contains i.a. houses from the 17th. century as well as the castle 'Sostrup Slot'. In the scenic area between the village and the beach 'Gjerrild Nordstrand' you will find the holiday house area of Gjerrild. Bønnerup is situated 10 km from Gjerrild offers a cosy atmosphere among the old fishing houses and in the scenically situated and active fishing harbour and marina. The harbour is a lovely place of sojourn and tables, benches and bbqs are available here. You can buy fresh fish here every day. It is possible to buy groceries in Gjerrild. You will find good shopping possibilities in Grenå, about 12 km from Gjerrild.
Beach The good, clean and popular bathing beach 'Gjerrild Nordstrand' has coarse sand and Blue Flag. Because of the shallow water, the beach is very suitable for children. It is popular to swim, sunbathe, build sandcastle, play ball, sail and surf here.
Nature Gjerrild is very scenically situated and surrounded by sea, preserved areas, rush beds and forest. You will find a magnificent nature by the 35 m high and 1700 m long calcareous cliff 'Gjerrild Klint', just south of the beach 'Gjerrild Nordstrand'. The beautiful and ecological forest 'Emmedsbo Skov' is situated east of Gjerrild and Bønnerup, right by the Kattegat, and contains a rich animal life, more lakes as well as many paths and roads.
Activities 4 golf courses are available in the immediate vicinity of Gjerrild. Anglers will find good opportunities along the shores, i.a. by the cliff 'Gjerrild Klint', from the piers of Bønnerup, in the lakes of the area and the forest 'Emmedsbo Skov' as well as in the Put & Take fishponds of the area. The beach and the lovely forests invite walks. Paragliding from the cliff 'Gjerrild Klint' is also a popular activity here.
Worth a visit The beautiful, red castle 'Sostrup Slot' by Gjerrild functions as a convent among other things.
Excursion spots Experience the activity and the atmosphere of the cosy towns Ebeltoft and Grenå. The towns carry you back in time with their narrow, cobbled streets and lopsided houses. The amusement park 'Djurs Sommerland' is a fun and interesting experience for the whole family. When the entry has been paid, you can make use of all activities for free. An impressive sight awaits you in the aquarium 'Kattegatcentret'. Observe the fearful sharks at close range behind a thick pane of glass (12 km). Moat, forest, fields and meadow scenically surround the castle 'Gl. Estrup'. The castle also contains a manor house museum and an agricultural museum (35 km). In the 'rain forest' Randers Regnskov you can experience jungle paths, rocks, crocodiles and waterfalls. Randers Regnskov lives up to its name (57 km).
