Sct. Catharinæ Kirke & Klostergården
|
The abbey church in Ribe, 'Sct. Catharinæ Kirke', is three-aisled, the interior of the church high-ceilinged, arched, whitewashed and with Gothic windows behind the altar from where the light is shining friendly into the pure, solemn room. The major part of the present church dates back to 1433. The church and the abbey were named after Catherine, an Egyptian princess who was martyred in 307 for her Christian beliefs. In the centre of the square 'Sct. Catharinæ Plads' stands a fountain dedicated to St. Catherine. Admire the four figures who are meant to reflect the history of the church: a warrior, a citizen, a monk and a Lutheran priest. The abbey is a most unique attraction in Denmark. Its tranquillity and unostentatious beauty is proof of the architecture of the Dominicans.
