Vitskøl Kloster

The monastery is a memorial from the era of the king Valdemar of Denmark (also know as 'Waldemar the Great'). As an appreciation to God for escaping the wars unhurt the king began building the monastery in the year 1157. In the year 1158 a Cistercian Order was founded in the monastery. They order lived under strict rules, which also appears clearly from the clear lines of Vitskøl Kloster. The monks brought medicinal plants to the monastery, and today some of these plants still grow wildly in the herb garden, which is the most famous in Denmark. Currently, the monastery belongs to the parish and functions as a modern and professional course and congress centre.
