Hals Skanse

The fortress defended the district well in the sixteenth and the following centuries. The fortress was closed down in 1848. Hals Skanse is now open to the public. The present redoubt was commenced under Christian IV in 1653 and finished in 1654. Skansen has been the setting for several battles and encounters and it is said to be the largest and best preserved single redoubt in Denmark. The layout had a square primary form, four bastions and moats. The powder magazine from 1676 and the arsenal from 1812 are preserved. The latter is now converted into a local museum (Hals Museum).
