Esrum Kloster

The Cistercian monastery from 1151 is situated north of the lake Esrum Sø in an untouched landscape with forest and meadows. Even today you can imagine that Esrum Kloster once was the ideal place for meditation and absorption. The quite special atmosphere of the place as well as the correlation between the building and the nature allow you to have a unique experience. The monastery contains a permanent exhibition about the Cistercians of Esrum Kloster. In the lovely monastery garden you will find a large selection of medicinal plants from the Middle Ages, and in the small pharmacy you can learn about the use of the herbs. The monastery basement with the arched ceiling houses the restaurant 'Broder Rus' Kælder', and here you can take a rest after the tour of the monastery. Try f.x. the famous Belgian Trappist beer, brewed by the Trappist monks. The shop by the entrance offers a rich variety of mediaeval literature, ornaments, glass, medicinal plants, honey, monastery beer etc.
